There is one surfing analogy that keeps proving true for me. It is what makes me push when everyone else takes a break. 🧵👇
The surfing analogy:
You need to paddle to the breaking point of a set (a set of waves to surf) before the set arrives. Most people sit on the beach and only see the surfer surfing - pushed by the wave, seemingly flying over the water with little effort.
They only see the payoff - not what leads to it:
1. Positioning: Every surfer first observes. Is there good swell coming in? From where is the wind coming? Where are favorable currents? Where are other surfers positioned?
2. Paddling: You need to get behind the breaking point of the waves. Paddling against waves that want to throw you back onto the beach. During this time it is easy to lose orientation and get pulled off track.
3. Patience: Once you arrive at the spot you chose, you need to hold position and watch for a good set to come in. Don't spoil everything on a small set.
4. Stand up: If you got all previous points right and are at the right spot at the right time, you need the guts to stand up and lean into the wave.
5. Surf: Now you are surfing. Exhilaration hits your board. You gain speed. Keep balance and enjoy the ride.
Others only see you ride.
They enter the water now.
But the set has passed.
They are too late.
They did not position before.
They did not paddle when it mattered.
