It seems I’ve stirred the pot on interracial marriage. So, here are some additional thoughts: I use “interracial” because historically race has been inseparable from culture. I know it’s not skin color alone that creates difficulty, it’s mostly the intercultural matters. I also know that interracial marriage is not sinful but it often comes with additional hurdles that can make marriage more difficult. Those hurdles can be overcome by Christ. But pretending those hurdles don’t exist is naive. What’s fascinating is this: hundreds of interracial Christian couples have agreed with me, whole hundreds of non-interracial couples attack me for saying these marriages aren’t always “ideal.” The suggestion that ethnocentric marriages can be more natural, aligned, or harmonious immediately triggers the egalitarian ideology, white guilt, and fear of “racism” in many Americans. This reveals how far our society has gone in rejecting the reality of race and culture. Let me offer some context. Prior to the modern era (pre 1920), my position was almost universally understood. Even the beloved puritans who are affirmed by nearly all Christians—the puritans who shaped the Presbyterian, Reformed, and Anglican churches—outlawed interracial marriage. The majority of the (very Christian) 13 colonies had laws against interracial marriage and 41 of the 50 states had laws against it through 1967. Now, I’m not arguing for outlawing interracial marriage. It should not be illegal. But it should at least cause Christians to ask why nearly every pre-modern theologian, magistrate, church, and society thought this way about interracial marriage. Modern multicultural ideology (diversity, equality, pluralism, tolerance, etc.) has erased our ability to even admit the possibility of increased difficulty of a marriage between two people of different races/culture. One statement like mine results in moral outrage. This is a reaction to the fear that if you’re not totally accepting that everyone and all marriages are exactly equal, you may be “racist” or a “bigot” or a “Nazi.” So, reality must be denied. People attack me rather than my message. They mock rather than discuss. So no, interracial marriage is not sinful, wicked, or to be outlawed. But it must also not be treated as normative because it’s not normative. We have thousands of years of data that testify to that fact. Were all of our forefathers racist? No. They simply understood that shared race and culture are helpful realities in marriage, nationalism, and heritage. This truth doesn’t disappear just because modern ideology forbids us from saying it.
