As expected, Google is making sideloading harder on Android… but it is NOT going anywhere Here's the new way in simple steps: • Turn ON Developer Mode in settings • Confirm no one is forcing you • Restart your phone and unlock again • Wait 24 hours, then verify with fingerprint / face / PIN • Now you can install apps (7 days or always) More steps, but you still have the choice

This is my device, bought with my own money… just let me use it however I want. I want to install APKs whenever I want, sideload apps, unlock the bootloader, root the device, and run whatever I choose. It’s my phone, I paid for it, and I take full responsibility for it. If I make a mistake, that’s on me. Stop forcing restrictions on everyone and treating users like they can’t decide for themselves.

When VS Code already has the Source Control feature, why do developers still use Git commands in the terminal for pushing, committing, or cloning repositories? 👀

The big story for 2026 isn't just a design tweak. It’s a major architectural shift in the silicon that powers the phone.

Some personal news: This is my last day at Android Authority, and it also marks the end of my time posting Android news! I've spent the past 10 years writing about Android, and I've enjoyed every moment of it. What began as a hobby in college — tinkering with custom ROMs and modding my phone — turned into a long career, one totally disconnected from my degree in Biomedical Engineering. I am not a developer by trade or education, so I've had to learn a LOT to report on Android the way that I do. I've had my share of missteps along the way, but thanks to the help from the developer and enthusiast community, I've learned SO MUCH. I hope I've been successful in passing much of that knowledge on to you! Thank you to everyone who has followed my journey. I wouldn't have done this work for very long if nobody was there to read it. Your comments encouraged me to invest countless hours into finding new Android features, all in the hopes of sharing these discoveries with people who love the platform as much as I do! If you're wondering what's next, I'll have more to share later. For now, I've got about a month to take care of personal matters, hit the gym, and prepare for relocation! Thanks for everything! P.S. If you're wondering, "where will I get my Android news from now?!" I highly recommend @AndroidAuth! I'm obviously biased, but the team there is fantastic and the content they produce is solid! Also, do check out the @AndroidFaithful podcast — Ron, Huyen, Jason, and Flo are a joy to listen to each week!

Viva la resistance! The Android community has spoken and revolted on the issue of sideloading and developer verification, and Google has listened! "Empowering experienced users While security is crucial, we’ve also heard from developers and power users who have a higher risk tolerance and want the ability to download unverified apps. Based on this feedback and our ongoing conversations with the community, we are building a new advanced flow that allows experienced users to accept the risks of installing software that isn't verified. We are designing this flow specifically to resist coercion, ensuring that users aren't tricked into bypassing these safety checks while under pressure from a scammer. It will also include clear warnings to ensure users fully understand the risks involved, but ultimately, it puts the choice in their hands. We are gathering early feedback on the design of this feature now and will share more details in the coming months." android-developers.googleblog.com/2025/11/androi…

I have so many questions about this. Will this in any way affect third party sites like APKMirror? How will Google match identities of developers to sideloaded APKs? Based on signatures? I'm so confused.
Mishaal Rahman@MishaalRahman

🔐BREAKING: Google will begin verifying the identity of ALL DEVELOPERS who distribute apps on Android, even if it's outside the Play Store! This is to prevent malware developers from using anonymity as a shield. Full details👇 Tip @Techmeme! 🔗androidauthority.com/android-develo…

Google should learn that having non-tech celebrities for the Pixel event is total cringe. Who is the audience for this, really ? Someone like Dieter Bohn or even Marques would have been a great pick or just Google staff ! Jimmy Fallon being excited about IP68 is too much for me to handle 😅 !

@kevinslife2 @MishaalRahman I don't see a problem with this. If a user decides that they want to install apps from questionable sources, then they should be responsible for accepting the risks that come with it. The Play Integrity API is also not a good solution since it restricts user freedom.

@DavidBerdik @MishaalRahman Because Google can't use Play Protect on 3rd party app stores for the next 3 years, we need Play Integrity now more than anytime. Tempered and fake apps will rampant for the next few years and the only way to identify them will be Play Integrity API
