Earlier this week, Republicans jammed a bill through the House that requires public schools to forcibly out trans students, even if it puts them in danger. They think they can just legislate transgender people out of existence—but they are dead wrong. To the trans community, I see you and will not stop fighting for you.

It requires federally funded elementary and middle schools to obtain explicit parental consent before altering a student’s gender markers, pronouns, preferred name, or sex-based accommodations like bathrooms. I don’t see in the bill how this would legislate transgender people out of existence. You’re wrong. The legislation wants parents to be informed of what’s going on in the classroom. Most parents think they are learning to read, write and do basic math. Maybe social studies and current events. You think Parents shouldn’t know what teachers and staff are doing with their kids? These students are ages- Elementary school: Roughly ages 5–11 (Kindergarten ~5–6; 5th grade ~10–11). Middle school: Roughly ages 11–14 (6th grade ~11–12; 8th grade ~13–14).
