two titles by Jane Austen & not a single title by Dostoyevsky, Melville, Faulkner, Hemingway, Thomas Mann... suggests we are in the Anglo equivalent of Cloud Cuckoo-Land.

Toni Morrison is one of the few Americans with the Nobel Prize in Literature. Beloved is an agreed-upon member of the American canon, and a contender for the claim of the Great American Novel. The only reason one could find this choice “absurd” is that it’s by a black author

Why do people write tweets like this? Where every sentence gets a new line. Sometimes a line might have two sentences. Like this one. But generally speaking, every sentence has a new line, making a tweet look like a long block of text that no one reads. Worse still, such tweets are often repetitive and winding, hammering on the same point over and over again. The writing is often very bad.

Trump: "Something has to be done about Fake Polls! They are truly OUT OF CONTROL. We have the Greatest Economy in the History of our Country, we have the Strongest Border in History, nobody has ever done a job like I have done, and they have me in the low 40s. The Democrats destroyed Healthcare, I’m trying to fix it, and they give me FAKE low numbers. Fake Polls on the Economy, on the Border, on just about everything, are ridiculous and dangerous. The REAL Polls have been GREAT, but they refuse to print them. This is no different than a writer who is corrupt, of which there are many. The New York Times, and so many others, print Polls that are knowingly false. They have become deranged, and sick. They suffer from a major case of TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME (TDS). Their 2024 Election coverage was so bad, and so wrong, and yet they never get called out for it — But I am calling them out with the lawsuit that I have filed which is making its way through the Courts. They have to pay a price for FAKE AND FRAUDULENT NEWS and, hopefully, in the not too distant future, they will!"

A story I found about Haiti: In 1999, a group of Haitians were tired of political disorder and dreamed of a better life in the United States. So they built a small, 23-foot boat by hand using pine trees, scrap wood, and used nails. They called the boat "Believe in God." 🧵

@thirty3i8ght @DAMendelsohnNYC @zenahitz @nytimes Pretty sure the NY Times can use prefer/than and passenger jets will still stay in the air, contracts will still be legally binding. A resounding Yes to strict linguistic accuracy in engineering & law. Everyday media reports bowing to the demotic on prepositional use? Unimportant

@DavidPZone @DAMendelsohnNYC @zenahitz @nytimes The last time widespread slippage was constant and embraced, English was a peasant’s tongue spoken on an insular island. Times have changed and it’s the global lingua franca for law, engineering, etc. Standards must be kept

@thirty3i8ght @DAMendelsohnNYC @zenahitz @nytimes It’s how the language works. Constant slippage into vernacular forms has been a feature of English for centuries. It’s only since the (relatively recent) invention of usage rules that people have had a problem with it

99 % of Western atheists don’t merely “lack belief” in God. They positively assert “there is no God and nothing supernatural exists.” That’s a strong metaphysical claim, not a neutral absence. If you make that claim, the burden of proof is on you. Saying “ I just lack belief” doesn’t cut the mustard…

@JohnRuddick2 @Matt_Camenzuli Such hysteria. A generation from now, Australia will exist. It just won’t be an Australia you happen to feel comfortable with. But if you want people to have more babies: 1: Make housing affordable 2: For extra points, do it without blaming immigrants for the housing crisis

Australia wont exist in a generation if we don’t solve the baby drought … so what to do? Had a nice dinner with @Matt_Camenzuli and others tonight. Matt suggested 0% income tax for families with four kids. Discuss.

@Zemoeki1 @Kulambq Yep & also odd when ppl talk about the bible as one single “literary work”. It’s a bunch of texts, some of which are great but others are pedestrian & dull. As for the KJV, NT is great (although heavily cribbed from Tyndale) but large swathes of the OT are pretty average

Richard Dawkins, with whom I have profound disagreements, once wrote: 'A native speaker of English who has never read a word of the King James Bible is verging on the barbarian.' Those who proudly declare that they don’t read the Bible, dismissing it as patriarchal or outdated, often believe this makes them edgy. Yet, in doing so, they often reveal a lack of genuine curiosity and cultural awareness. You don’t have to be a believer to appreciate the Bible; it remains one of the greatest literary works ever written, foundational to our language, art, and thought.

@RollingStone @gtconway3d Republicans are going to be in trouble in 2028. Trump got people who never voted in a presidential election to vote for him. His base loves him but if his name is not on the ballot, they may stay home. I don’t see JD Vance having the charisma to keep those voters.

@DeathMetalV @Sportyster I think you’re right about the fantasy thing, but not sure how much genuine belief plays into it. Obvs in some cases, but often I think it’s more like the willing suspension of disbelief, which is what we bring to games, movies etc (again this goes to your point about fantasy)

One thing I've learned seeing all the clips from that Jubilee is that right-wingers don't want to actually debate. They want to BE the bad guys. They think it's powerful to be a bad guy. It's all fantasy to them, and that's why there is no chance of ever reaching them.
