I’m probably going to get some pushback on this, but pedophilia is in fact a type of sexual orientation. That doesn’t mean that we should tolerate it, however. What it does mean is that we need to be aware that preferential pedophiles do not rehabilitate. No amount of therapy or medication will prevent them from being sexually interested in children, and no matter what they may tell prison psychologists, no matter how well behaved they are in prison, once they offend for the first time, they can never be trusted again. Preferential child molesters are obsessed with children. They fantasize constantly, and they always have an eye out for vulnerable children. Many of them arrange their entire lives so as to be in contact with children as some kind of authority figure: pedophiles become doctors, priests, teachers, and coaches, as well as Boy Scout leaders, specifically so that they will have access to children. Getting caught will only stop them for the length of their imprisonment; once released, they go right back to preying on kids. If we are going to protect children from these people, then we need to stop pretending that they can be cured. The possession of child sexual abuse material (child pornography) should automatically get a predator life without parole, and if they cross the line and molest a child, they should be facing the death penalty upon conviction, with a streamlined appeals process that will last no more than two years to prevent further trauma to their victims and their families.
