@Petagna It’s literally 7 days till summer officially starts. And that’s just an arbitrary divide. It’s often boiling in May. There is so much hysteria about a bit of warmth after all the rain and greyness I’m looking forward to some sun on my back.

@The_TUC Just as the railways get nationalised, the unions find a nice way to give their drivers time off when the sun comes out.

BREAKING 🚨 | As Britain's first heatwave of 2026 begins, the TUC is calling for a maximum working temperature to protect workers. Workers should be able to stop work above 30°C, or 27°C for those doing strenuous jobs. With heatwaves becoming more common, we need new laws on maximum working temperatures, cooler workplaces, and climate action to reduce global heating.

@PeterStefanovi2 Most youngsters get their news in bitesize pieces. They don’t watch mainstream media. Governments need to get better at using these platforms.

🚨DESPITE NET MIGRATION HAVING FALLEN BY 82% SINCE ITS PEAK NEARLY HALF OF BRITONS INCORRECTLY BELIEVE ITS ACTUALLY INCREASED! Politicians have now been blamed for skewing the public's understanding of immigration levels. This is a shocking indictment of the abject failure of UK news shows to get the actual facts about net migration across to the public and call out the bull**** by the likes of Nigel Farage. If UK news shows can’t get the job done let’s damn well do it ourselves!

@TheRealJamieKay Reduce vat in pubs and restaurants to 5% and you’ll not only help hard up families but save thousands of jobs too. 5% on a kids meals is going to save you about a quid.

Rachel Reeves cutting VAT on family summer activities is exactly the kind of practical politics people want to see. Helping families afford days out, freezing fuel duty and easing pressure during the holidays instead of endless culture wars? More of this please.

Landlords love to fearmonger as if without them the houses would just vanish They won't If landlords vanished overnight we could invest in mass council buy back of properties, increasing council housing stock which we all know is much better for renters
Kirstie Allsopp@KirstieMAllsopp

Surprise, surprise @wesstreeting is on @BBCr4today bashing landlords. I’ve got news for you mate, we can’t have a “productive nation” without people having homes, so if you want to tax Landlords to hell, I’d build some alternative accommodation first ‘cos you’re going to need it.

Here’s one for the Hearts and Rangers fans. Leverkusen go 5-0 up on 89:30 and the game doesn’t restart. 17k fine and nobody cried about it. Sooner you realise Celtic won the league the easier it’ll be

If it had better transport links, Barnstaple could become the LA of the UK. Amazing surfing/beaches, lots of space, plus the beauty of Exmoor. Just needs a motorway and more direct train line there.

@Steven_Swinford How can you manage to misjudge the country so badly. Most people aren’t bothered about someone renting out a property that they’ve probably invested a huge amount of of time and money in. They’re bothered about being taxed to the hilt and the welfare bill going through the roof.

Wes Streeting has this morning set out his tax plans - specifically bringing capital gains tax into line with income tax He says that the current system is unfair because it penalises work Higher or additional rate taxpayers will pay 24% on gains in the current financial year. Streeting said that the rates should mirror income tax bands - so 40% for higher rate taxpayers and 45% for additional rate taxpayers He says that the approach could raise £12billion a year Streeting said: “A member of my family is a cleaner in Lancashire. She pays a higher tax rate on her salary than her landlord pays for the growing value of the home she lives in. She slogs her guts out, he puts in far less effort, yet the state rewards him more than her. And we wonder why people are angry. “The system is penalising work. It’s not fair and it’s bad for our economy. We need a wealth tax that works. A pound made from simply owning assets should not be taxed less than a pound made from a hard day's work. We can do it in a way that is pro-growth, pro-entrepreneur and pro-work.”

The worst thing the government ever did for pubs was to let them open for longer hours. It was much better when pubs were open for lunch, then closed again for evening drinking. Spreading the drinking out across the day just makes them too expensive to run.

@doqholliday I’ve already got them on the housing ladder. Selling up now and downsizing would take a huge lump out of what’s left for them when we go. Stamp duty etc is horrendously expensive. That’s why people aren’t downsizing. It’s not selfishness, it’s actually the complete opposite.

If you're a boomer in your 60s and 70s and you own property and are well off but your children are struggling and can't even buy a home, what the hell are you doin? Your time is over. It's their time. Help them. Be a good parent, do whatever it is you need to do... sell the house if you need to, give them some kickbacks to help buy their first home, etc. Life is short. Be a good parent and don't squat on stuff that doesn't matter. Give them their time.

@paddyb53 You are correct. It’s not that at all. People who follow footy, particularly in the uk, root for the underdogs. Celtic and rangers winning it every year is predictable. Nobody outside Scotland really cared till it looked like an underdog might win it. Now they don’t care again.

People all over the UK losing their minds over a Scottish Club winning their 14th title in 15 seasons...it couldn't possibly be that the club that was formed by Irish Catholic immigrants to feed the poor and destitute of Glasgow's East End is their problem....surely not....?

None of this happened by accident. Strong growth figures show that this government has the right economic plan. And now, the IMF has upgraded the UK’s growth forecast. This growth is driven by an activist, interventionist government that believes in backing British business.

This government backs small businesses. For too long, they have been forced to waste time chasing late payments, costing the economy and forcing businesses to close. We are delivering the toughest action in a generation to make sure small businesses are paid on time.

@RmSalih Unfortunately that particular attitude to the millions of people who enjoy a drink or two makes you sound a bit sanctimonious. Might as well get rid of everything that’s bad for you and suck all the joy out of your entire life.

As someone who is just never around alcohol I found the experience of smelling it and being around lots of drunk people yesterday extremely uncomfortable. I washed my clothes and myself as soon as I got back home just to get rid of the stench. Leaving religion aside, I just don't get why anyone would drink something that is obviously so bad for your health and which deprives you of self control. I know that alcohol is a major part of many people's lives here and perhaps that's even more true for the working class. But the devil's brew is the devil's brew and anyone who avoids it has an instant advantage in life.
