Software engineers shouldn't fear being replaced by AI. They should fear being asked to maintain the sprawling mess of AI-generated legacy code their employer's systems will soon run on. Because that one will actually happen.

@mgill25 I am sure it might be increasing them. More time goes into solving problems of integration that may not be as straight forward as a prompt.

AI can't solve people management issues. Because the problems aren't about intelligence or knowledge. It's about emotions.

Had a fantastic time today in Delhi. Ended up meeting @Delta2315 , @prabhatexit0 and @ttanay100 Lots of passion for compilers/databases, rare to come across that in Delhi/NCR. Spoke about building projects, systems groups, learning, papers etc. Also great coffee and burgers!

@jaidevd This is too comfortable for me to focus. I can't even work on a sofa. There is a level of discomfort that probably is required for attention.

This is definitely a good idea. A narvodiya Vidyalaya attached to uni specializing in math. This could give great boost to future research
Nilesh Trivedi@nileshtrivedi

One of the very interesting innovations in the UK education system is the high-schools specializing in the study of mathematics. These are called "Maths schools", have selective admissions, are sponsored by a nearby university and receive additions grants from the government. @kingsmathschool was the first one started in 2014 and the models seems to be working well enough that a few years later, more like @ExeterMathsSc @CamMathsSchool @LivMathsSchool @LUSoM_ have come up. It seems to be the need of the hour for India as well.

Current LLMs are trained on text data that would take 20,000 years for a human to read. And still, they haven't learned that if A is the same as B, then B is the same as A. Humans get a lot smarter than that with comparatively little training data. Even corvids, parrots, dogs, and octopuses get smarter than that very, very quickly, with only 2 billion neurons and a few trillion "parameters."
Yann LeCun@ylecun

Animals and humans get very smart very quickly with vastly smaller amounts of training data. My money is on new architectures that would learn as efficiently as animals and humans. Using more data (synthetic or not) is a temporary stopgap made necessary by the limitations of our current approaches.

Those talking about hustling in PyCon India 2012 are talking about health and well being in #pyconindia2023. But I'm eternally glad that I'm able to run into the same people a decade apart, while constantly making new friends. You know who you are. 🤗 See you next year!

Yes, fundamentally I think people work for ego. Money just seems give them a clear sense of boost.
RandomSpark@ShripadAgashe

@realmeson10 If not money then it is often for the ego. So is working for ego better or money better?

Turns out the Shahmukhi character set was still in the works when I was working on the above project. On a similar note, the initial domain for Punjabi wikipedia also was simply for a Gurmukhi-based wiki with subdomain of pb,which I remember was changed to pb_IN and pb_PK. 4/n

At that time, I had a vague idea that Punjabi was written differently as "Shahmukhi" in West Punjab, And I wondered how people there would write if this is the Punjabi Unicode character set. 3/n

I was reminded of some things I saw very early in my career. My first piece of professional work was helping adapt a spell checker aspell to Punjabi. Aspell worked very well for indic languages 1\n

I just thought socio-political ideas also have an engineering impact. Why I suddenly remembered about this, though, I don't know, or do I.

@ponnappa @protosphinx I think non-tech has been mislead to mean non expertise. If anything it's likely that non-tech founder has better understanding of the problem space.

Non tech founders are like dogs on a road trip. They think they’re important but they’re not. They’re just there for company.

@apansinghal Not to say that it wasn't a great movie. But it was much like any other bollywood movie which is fine by itself but the very nature of bollywood as a mass medium has always meant that it makes things too simple. And ever so often we as society don't take the leap forward 1/2

What I love about Rang De Basanti is that it never seemed as if there was any adaptations to the script for fitting in Aamir as the star of the film. It's hard to think of any other major Hindi film doing that.
Bhaisahab@Bhai_saheb
