Building the future is serious business. After hearing about the mythical event known as MARS for years, @ICastroGarcia @mauro_teran and I finally had the great honor to attend this year. The event, generously hosted by @JeffBezos, gathers minds working on Machine learning, Automation, Robotics, and Space. It was unbelievable to share meals and conversations with Nobel Laureates, world renown scientists, film directors, and some of the most consequential founders of our time building things to improve humanity. We also had the great pleasure to demo our product to some of our icons, including @Lexfridman @donttrythis, @DarrenAronofsky, Jeff Bezos & Lauren Sanchez, Jon Favreau, and others. In times where pessimism dominates headlines, it was refreshing and inspiring to be part of a community fueled by optimism that we can leave the earth better than we found it.

With Apple Vision Pro launching in the coming days following a decade-long investment, and new devices joining the space of new consumer hardware paradigms, 2024 will be more about #atoms than bits. To fully harness the potential of #AI, leverage new #senses, explore new ways of interaction—moving beyond harmful models and limiting platforms—and refocus on what's truly essential for our lives, new custom hardware and sensors will have to be built. The @emerge_io team, @slyjacklee, @mauro_teran, and I are working very hard to make a difference in the consumer experience this 2024.

Physical touch is deeply emotional and important. While haptic gloves have potential for a number of applications, we believe in natural, bare-hand interaction to bring touch to the mass consumer. This week is likely our most significant in 8 years, marking an inflection point for all of us @emerge_io. Today's @Apple reveals are a nod to the work of so many people over so many years—and reaffirm something we've known all along despite the hype cycles: 1) XR never disappeared, it was merely evolving, and 2) it's time for a new communication platform. Since 2015, we've held firm to our contrarian views: 1- 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 & 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲: at home, we need a comfortable, seated user experience, not overrated and artificial room-scale ones 2- 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗲-𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: we deserve natural and frictionless interaction. Physical touch is both emotional and necessary—but haptic gloves don't make sense. 3- 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: the creation of vivid memories with loved ones is invaluable. We should be able to transcend time and distance with those we care about. 4- 𝗧𝗩 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Integrating existing displays with AR capabilities is a significant step forward for a better way to communicate with our loved ones far away—not only with early tech adopters, but also our grandparents. Tim Cook's emphasis on the potential of AR and VR for #communication echoes our mission at Emerge—bridging distance and time through multi-sensory communication. We believe in a future where presence isn't a luxury, but a standard of communication. While Apple's headset might be making the headlines, the real evolution lies in the convergence of AI and XR, and the new sensory hardware enabling this shift. I'm excited, honored, and nervous to share that @fromthehip (representing Electric South) and I (representing @emerge_io) have been selected as Co-Chairs for the @wef Metaverse Council. Chat GPT / AI is the hot topic at the moment, and while I do believe OpenAI has achieved something truly groundbreaking, I’m very interested in what will be the future platforms that host AI. As Sam Altman said in a recent interview with Greylock VC, “In the upside case, the Metaverse could turn out to be the new iPhone- a new container for software and AI”. Our role as a council will be to complement the WEF Metaverse Initiatives on Governance and Value Creation (which my co-founder @ICastroGarcia is a part of) by focusing on outputs to increase Metaverse literacy, specifically for end users and governments.
