I started working on a wip fic because I wanted it to be my first post on ao3, and since then my graphics card died, my backup graphics card died, 2 keyboards have died, I've had 4 trailers with structural failures, and when I finally started working on it again, my dog died.

Even being charitable and accepting the steelman argument at face value, “powerscaling” is, at best, a secondary concern on par with tracking the passage of time. If it is relevant for your story, it’s good to have the broad strokes! But in most cases it requires barely more than common sense, and spending more time on it than needed is throwing your time and effort down the drain. Mind you, I say this as someone writing a battle heavy litRPG where I literally DO have to track my characters’ power levels over the course of the story. Even *then* “can this character beat that character?” never warrants the same amount of deliberation as plot, themes, or character motivations.

The term “powerscaling” is inextricably tied to borderline illiterate neckbeards arguing over whether Goku can beat Superman. Any attempt to appropriate it as describing legitimate literary practice must either confront this association or fall flat on its face.
