@becomelutheran His argument is pretty standard. Though there is also more to say about suspended endings in classical literature. Jim Voelz, who wrote the CPH Mark commentary, ends his comments at Mark 16:8.

My hope in posting this is that someone with a lot more knowledge than myself will have some comments on the subject or his argument.

When I first explored Lutheranism I was very surprised by how often Mark 16:16 was the reference point for baptismal regeneration. This is a very popular Evangelical apologist discussing the long ending of Mark. He says it's not inspired ultimately m.youtube.com/watch?v=B9RsHn…

In the third episode of Variant Readings, we talk through 1 Peter 1:17-23. This section leads up to a major connection between the prophecy in Isaiah 40 and the resurrection of Jesus. youtube.com/watch?v=QBNFR2…

Here's a new podcast that some will hopefully find helpful. It focuses on the epistle readings from the Revised Common Lectionary and is geared toward church workers and laity who know, are learning, or want to learn some Greek.

@MattStaneck @bschultzy To your point earlier, Lutherans also have a desire to see themselves as excellent readers of the text, which I think is itself an insecure response and leads to a certain kind of hubris exacerbating the problem.

I’ve said this for years, but the LCMS’ long-time focus on the vague threat of anything that could be labeled liberalism, along with a lack of deeper engagement in political theology, has left us incredibly vulnerable to a whole slew of unbiblical garbage.
Dr Jordan B. Cooper@DrJordanBCooper

Kinda weird that nobody is talking about this, but a recent conference of LCMS pastors had a presentation in which it is argued that chattel slavery is commanded by God and he got a standing ovation. Just throwing it out there. Minute 32: youtu.be/0IizshrQn9E?si…

@bschultzy @MattStaneck There are always some sinister characters, but for most I think it's a desire to be faithful without the biblical literacy to faithfully express orthodox positions. That also allows attractive, worldly narratives to have a foothold and give rise to a worldly response.

@MattStaneck @bschultzy This especially reveals itself when you scratch the surface only a little and find a high level of biblical insecurity which often manifests in impulsive outbursts rather than demonstrating humility, stability, and self-control.

@bschultzy It also shows that as a church body we are very poor at reading and interpreting scripture. And this is a serious problem because, among other reasons, we imagine ourselves excellent interpreters of scripture.

@pjgurry I don't know the origin, but it's Lutheran lore that goes at least as far back as the 17th century.

It was great to have the opportunity to talk about Codices Boernerianus and Augiensis last week! First in their Latin texts, then in their Greek texts! #sblaar24
