I lodged in a hotel last month for 3 nights at ₦40k per night. I wanted to pay before going into the room, but the receptionist told me to rest first and said she would bring the POS machine later because I looked tired. About two hours later, she came to my room and started telling me how the manager had not paid her salary, even though it was already the middle of another month. I kept sympathizing with her, thinking it was just conversation. After the long story, she requested my card and deducted ₦80k. It didn’t immediately register what was happening until she then gave me an account number and asked me to transfer another ₦40k to help her. That was when I realized something was off. When I refused, she called the other staff on night duty to help persuade me too. After all the back and forth, I told them clearly that I would not pay for the third night or the remaining ₦40k until the day I was checking out. They agreed. By the second night, I learned both of them had resigned because their salaries had not been paid. I sent the 40k to the account she gave when I was checking-out. This is my experience about how money leak in establishment. Compare it with the level at which it will happen in government owned institution with low inspection.
