This is completely wrong-headed. These 60' busses have enormous externalities on cars and pedestrians. They constantly block intersections and drive car traffic to a crawl. This is even worse given the dedicated bus streets/lanes that were added, especially since busses continue to operate in non-bus lanes and outside the dedicated bus streets. A 60' bus is 4 cars accounting for spacing which given the percentage busses have less than 4 passengers (including return to bay) is meaningful. Then there are the bus stops and closed to car streets which killed retail. These externalities are real costs to the city and people who live there. I lived downtown for 3 decades and never have busses been at capacity. Not during rush hours or even events. Ridership was going down before the pandemic and hasn't even gotten back to pre-pandemic levels. The population has been going up while bus ridership in absolute numbers peaked a decade ago. On top of all this, the busses Seattle acquired are operationally crazy expensive and single sourced. Seattle busses operate at over $21 per mile. Retail price of an Uber is between $1-1.50 per mile. There's capacity math where it makes more sense for the city to just Uber people around even at retail and get rid of all the bus lanes and stops.
