@0mgould a great many of us came to GIS from "remote sensing" (back in the day) - imagery was the original input data to many early GISs (with at least one very notable exception)

@joelgolby Anyone other than captain running up to referee and/or swearing at officials gets a yellow card first offence - like rugby - would instantly (well after the first sending off) stop the gratuitous in your face behaviour

🗣️ BUY FOUR STARS BY JOEL GOLBY
been thinking of some fun new rules that might improve football. first one is: whoever wins the penalty has to take it, unless they are so injured they have to be substituted, in which case the sub has to take it with their first kick

Devoured by Private Equity. Morrisons reports £1.1bn loss, £8.6bn debt pile, £735m interest paid, 8,800 jobs lost, assets sold, market share lost. Low wages/investment, high leverage, asset striping, job cuts, tax dodges are private equity speciality. theguardian.com/business/2024/…

@DanielHewittITV Though iiuc there are 1m+ approved planning applications waiting for ground to be broken - what’s stopping them? Protecting property values? Labour shortage? Materials inflations? #askingforafriend

Pretty much everyone - Tories, Labour, landlords, tenants - agree we need more affordable homes. The chronic shortage means Jas et al have nowhere to go. But England is LOSING the most affordable homes Last year 25,749 social homes were sold or demolished. Only 9,561 were built
Daniel Hewitt@DanielHewittITV

Jas received a cancer diagnosis and an eviction notice in the same month. We’ve followed her journey for the past 4 months, receiving treatment while facing homelessness. The use of no-fault evictions is soaring. It’s a practice the govt promised to ban in 2019 but still hasn’t.

@historyinmemes Addis Ababa mid 90s - recall a bowling alley (in a hotel basement maybe?) with manual pinsetters where machinery was defunct - paid by us players (and maybe by the alley?)

In Brooklyn, New York, in 1910, a captivating photograph captured human pinsetters diligently arranging bowling pins. The image, taken by Lewis Wickes Hine, showcases the manual labor involved in this role. However, the industry took a significant turn in 1936 when Gottfried Schmidt, a factory worker, revolutionized it by inventing a mechanical pinsetter. Schmidt ingeniously constructed the pinsetter using lamp shades and flower pots, resulting in a decline in the demand for human pinsetters.

@cyclisethecity @russellcurtis Am not sure it’s “run” by either; <50% proposed 3500 new builds in similar setting built, all roads predictably clogged @WokinghamBC as very much satellite dorms than centres; dig out the transport assessment for a wake up call/grim grin #planning can be so much better than this!

Local communities' complaints about central government housing targets don't seem so unreasonable when you see stuff like this being submitted to planning.

@philosophygeek Look forward to that post; one view might be that all the money put into space hardware will only get a return when some of those data analytics applications flourish and that will force/encourage price and licence rationalisation? Plus, less of the ‘satellite’!

Starting a post on why not to start a satellite data analytics company. ChatGPT gave some good (and some generic) reasons but missed the most important one: there are few markets where satellite data provides an edge that's not available from cheaper, easier data sources.

THREAD: The Benefits of EU Membership Let's remind ourselves of some of the things Brexit took from us when we left the EU. (Not an exhaustive list.) 1. No barriers to trade with the world's largest trading bloc. (Bristol, Berlin, Barcelona all equally accessible.)

@mouthofmorrison Back in the day (a long long time ago) when I “sold” imagery never sold the same scene twice; even then value was in the same scene at different dates - so much value in change

It’s easy to measure product market fit for us, it’s just a checklist based on the degree to which a potential customer is in disbelief about our pricing being public, our minimum order volume being zero, our license being Creative Commons, and our API being ready and documented.
