During my NYSC in 2018, I was travelling back to Gombe from Ekiti when the vehicle I boarded broke down. Fixing it took hours, and we didn’t get to Jos until past 8pm. There was nowhere to stay except the park. I was almost the only one who didn’t understand Hausa well. I just wanted to buy food and return to the vehicle to sleep quietly. While I was on a call with a friend explaining the whole stressful journey, a lady joined the queue beside me. After my call, she tapped me and asked me to step aside. She said I could sleep at her place if I didn’t mind, because it was too cold and not safe to stay at the park. I thought about it for a few seconds, called my people to inform them, then went back to tell the driver I’d join them in the morning. This woman boiled water for me to bathe that night and again the next morning. She gave me a thick duvet to keep warm and even slept on the floor herself. The next morning, she followed me back to the park. As I was leaving, she mentioned she had a flight to catch to Lagos. A complete stranger. I’m forever grateful to her. 🤍
