🟩 While in Ireland, Frederick Douglass wrote: 🟩 "One of the most pleasing features of my visit, thus far, has been a total absence of all manifestations of prejudice against me, on account of my colour. The change of circumstances in this is particularly striking... I find myself not treated as a color, but as a man – not as a thing." ◾️The city of Belfast will be the first in Ireland to honour him, with a statue in Lombard Street/Rosemary Street. #enlightenment #Equality #democracy

◾️ Before leaving Belfast in January 1846, Frederick Douglass uttered the heartfelt words.. .. "Wherever else I feel myself to be a stranger, I will remember I have a home in Belfast." It was Thomas McCabe, the Presbyterian radical, abolitionist and United Irishman who kept slave ships out of Belfast, his actions would prevent the slave trade ever taking hold in Ireland. In 1786 he stormed into a meeting at the Assembly Rooms in Belfast......

In 1898, Eliza Grier-an emancipated enslaved woman became the first black woman with a license to practice medicine in Georgia. To afford the cost of medical education at Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, she alternated each year of school with a year of picking cotton.
