Fun Fact:
Yoruba cultural attire is one of the most widely recognized and imitated traditional styles across Africa. The Gele, in particular, stands out for its elaborate, sculptural designs and striking visual appeal. It is a Yoruba traditional cultural head-dress worn by women, especially for ceremonies, and it has become a global symbol of elegance and cultural expression.
Due to Yoruba fashion influence, the gele has been spotted being worn by some people across different African countries, including Tanzania and Cameroon, where it is used as a borrowed self expression in celebratory context. Needless to say it also is popular among other non Yoruba cultures of Nigeria, from the Hausa to Igbo, to the Tiv to the Ijaw and so forth...
In contemporary African pop culture, gele styling has also recently appeared in music visuals outside the Yoruba context, including the South African amapiano music video “Tshwala Bam” by Titom and Yuppe.
Overall, the gele remains one of the most recognizable and influential elements of Yoruba fashion. And, no matter who wears it, A Gele remains a Gele.

Ichafu: the indigenous Igbo headdress now carries documented international academic recognition. In the Oxford University Press curriculum for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, the traditional southeastern Nigerian ceremonial headscarf is studied under “Textiles and Cultural Signs,” where its symbolism, patterns, and cultural meaning are examined alongside historic global garments including the Japanese Kimono. The Ichafu is not just a cultural attire, it is part of global art and cultural study.
