We are so excited to announce the availability of our new Hamilton College Digital Collections website: litsdigital.hamilton.edu. This website primarily includes materials that have been digitized from Hamilton's own Special Collections and Archives. Have fun exploring!

The digital archive features images, video, and sound recordings. More items are in the process of being added to the site and will be available once they have been integrated into the existing archive.

Who are benshi? And what did they do? During the silent film era in Japan, these vocal narrators sat or stood in a dimly visible spot to the left of the movie screen and spoke or chanted their setsumei (説明) or “explication” alongside the moving images.

Benshi: Silent Film Narrators in Japan is live! A collaboration between members of LITS and Prof Kyoko Omori, the Benshi archive features a curated collection of materials relating to benshi performance and culture from their beginnings to the present day. benshi.hamiltonlits.org/main/
