@RJABuggs Is this a 100 year vision? Is it realistic think any of what is proposed will be the right plants in 100 years time?

@oldpigsqueal @blackgull People did love the horses. The traction engines were sited, I was told, one at the top and one the bottom of the slope and the plough was pulled between them. The horses outlasted them and were still in use in places round here after the war.

Our NEW blog post explores the benefits of Continuous Cover Forestry for managing healthy, sustainable woodlands. We share it in loving memory of its co-author Bill Mason, late Chair of the Continuous Cover Forestry Group. He will be greatly missed. forestrycommission.blog.gov.uk/2024/07/11/the…

@RJABuggs The graphs are extremes but it makes a reasonable point. A percentage of timber removed continues to store timber, while the remaining forest grows faster. The effect is that well managed forests where the timber is used for building store more CO2

At #IUFRO2024 I came across these figures in a talk by Martin Forsén of Silvipar, suggesting that harvested forest rotations are better for carbon sequestration than unmanaged forests. Is this correct? [Figures here from holmen.com/en/sustainabil…]

When it gets personal Almost every day I am working on understanding heavy precipitation in a warming climate, I am giving many lectures and public talks. But it still feels very different now that it hit a region that is close to my heart.

Irish pine on the Burren. Controversy still rages over whether this little patch survived the ice-age in its sheltered dip, or whether it died out and was reintroduced from Scotland thousands of years later.

Congratulations to @Kateehalstead on publishing the first paper from her @ActionOak supported PhD. Good to see investigation of #StormArwen and impact on heritage trees in NE England.
Kate Halstead@Kateehalstead

I'm happy to share that our paper has been published in Forest Ecology and Management, @IUFRO 10th Wind and Trees Conference special edition. 'Localised damage patterns to oak during severe UK storms in winter 2021': authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S03… A huge thanks to all authors involved @GaultonRachel @quine_chris @andysuggitt Roy Sanderson and @ActionOak!

This article was a lot to take in. I needed a few days to reflect. 1/9 The ‘Mother Tree’ idea is everywhere — but how much of it is real? nature.com/articles/d4158…

@erleellis @andyheald Interesting! Authors based in Liverpool and Oxford per the article. Also I am sure the paper itself is more nuanced than the Guardian. However, there remains a problem of limited academic discussion on adaption of ecosystems to a changing climate

#RootstockDevon. Hugely informative. Excellent sessions on soil, biodiversity, marketing & livestock. Two standout comments: Professor Michael Lee of @HarperAdamsUni suggests farmers should “aim for the sweet spot between making profit & minimising impact on the environment.” 1/2
