While in Boston, the team of transplantologists learned of the mechanisms that underlie a successful transplant program, key principles of how to perform cardiothoracic transplants, approaches to improve donor and recipient selection and pre and postoperative care of patients.

To address the ongoing need for a robust, transparent and high-quality system across all organ transplants in Ukraine, four Ukrainian physicians participated in observerships at MGH in the Department of Surgery and Department of Medicine.

Now, back in Ukraine, Dr. Kostenchak-Svystak will share the insights gained from her observership with her colleagues and work to implement a similar bone marrow transplantation program at her hospital.

Dr. Kostenchak-Svystak, a Ukrainian hematologist, has just finished up her 1 month observership at MGH. Under the mentorship of Dr. Spitzer, Dr. Kostenchak-Svystak learned of the leading-edge strategies for bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

Last month Dr. Melnitchouk shared at the UMANA conference the incredible work of @GMKA_org in support of Ukraine and Ukraine’s health care system. The presentation included overviews of initiatives the NGO has developed.

Now, back in Ukraine, Dr. Huivaniuk is leading a 1 year project to implement the elements of quality improvement she observed while in Boston, supported by networks she gained in the US, including @gmka_org, John Hopkins Medicine, HMS, & MGB.

Dr. Huivaniuk is a surgical oncologist from Ukraine who was here in Boston for 3 months as part of the SAR program. In addition to clinical knowledge, she learned of the importance of quality improvement through standardization, efficient organization, & clinical analysis.
