“New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces a $7 billion budget hole.” What a surprise. Who would have thought that a socialist utopia doesn’t work? Mamdani, the “bright future of the Democratic Party,” came in promising dreams and free programs. He promised to fix poverty through strict rent controls, a $30 minimum wage, city-owned grocery stores, and — of course — “seizing the means of production.” Typical socialist populism. And of course, people bought into it. Now the bill is arriving, and we are learning again that socialism doesn’t work. When policies push investors and high earners out, the middle class ends up paying the price through higher taxes, fewer services, and growing budget holes. I lived under the Soviet Union, where “society” owned everything, yet ordinary people had nothing. Socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried — and it is failing now in NYC. The truth is that Mamdani’s socialism is no better than Trump’s MAGA. In fact, they are two sides of the same fanatical coin — only pointing in opposite directions. Today’s America is a country where the middle class is rapidly growing poorer while the richest get richer at a staggering pace. This extreme inequality fuels populists who exploit people’s pain and despair. Trump was no different. He promised to fix the problem. He claimed the culprit was an imaginary “deep state.” He came as a messiah — only to become the deep state himself. He filled the White House with dozens of billionaires to “help the poor.” The irony was breathtaking. And yet, people cheered. Then came the “Big Ugly Bill,” which, in the words of former Council of Economic Advisers Chair Jared Bernstein, is “the largest transfer of resources from the poor to the rich in our history.” Never mind that almost two-thirds of Americans opposed it. Or that it added $5 trillion to the national debt. Or that 16 million people lost health insurance. Both MAGA and socialism are dangerous in their own ways. Worse, they reinforce each other. Trump’s movement has created such deep societal contempt that open socialists like Mamdani win elections. Meanwhile, the rise of socialism actually cements Trump and MAGA in power — because to many, he appears to be the lesser evil. This is the cruel reality of populism.
