Barnsley FC On This Day in History
On this day in 1989, a Barclays Football League representative team played a team made of Skol Northern League players to mark the centenary of the Northern League. It was badged the ‘first meeting between the world’s two oldest leagues’ and was played at Croft Park, Blyth. The FL team was intentionally made up of players born in the north east including Bryan Robson, Paul Gascoigne, Chris Waddle and Barnsley’s David Currie. The Northern League side played in the red and white stripes and black shorts of South Bank, the only survivors from 1889 when the league started. The match ended 2-2, David Linighan and Marco Gabbiadini scorers for the FL. #BarnsleyFC #DavidCurrie #SkolNorthernLeague

Once the greatest day in the football calendar! FA Cup 3rd Round Saturday 8th January 1977 All 32 ties were played on the same day, with the majority kicking off at 3pm, except for a few games due to two teams playing in the same city. Tonight the FA Cup 3rd Round kicks off and it’s spread over 4 days for Television, and on Saturday there are only 10 games kicking off at the traditional time of 3pm. The magic of the FA Cup! #FACup

On this day in 1978, Barnsley won 1-0 at Scunthorpe United, Alan Little scoring the winner. It meant the Reds, led by new player/manager Allan Clarke, had won the first 5 games of the season in Division 4, matching the club record start to a season set in 1921. The start of the end of the lean years.... #BarnsleyFC #AllanClarke #AlanLittle #ScunthorpeUnited

On this day in 1929, sandwiched between away fixtures at Tottenham on 7th and Chelsea on 11th, Secretary Manager Arthur Fairclough took his Barnsley team to Amsterdam to play Ajax in a friendly. Goals from Albert Pigg and Jimmy Proudfoot gave the Reds a 2-0 lead only for Ajax to come back and level at 2-2 before h-t. Van Reenen then completed a hat-trick to put Ajax in front before Proudfoot got his 2nd and the final score was 3-3. Unsurprisingly given the amount of travelling, the games in London were both lost, 2-1 v Tottenham and 2-0 v Chelsea. #BarnsleyFC #Ajax #JimmyProudfoot

On this day in 2015, England Under-21s, including John Stones and Harry Kane, warmed up for the European Under-21 Championship which started a few days later by beating 10-man Belarus 1-0 at Oakwell. Belarus were reduced to 10 men in the 82nd minute when Mikalai Zolatau was shown his second yellow card & from the resulting set piece, goalkeeper Vasiliuchak could not hold Luke Garbutt's free-kick and Ben Gibson converted from close range. #BarnsleyFC #EnglandU21
