NEW: HS2 trains will run slower than originally planned to cut costs, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is set to announce. The top speed will be reduced from 360km/h (224mph) to 320km/h (199mph), according to PA. That still makes HS2 faster than Japan’s bullet trains.

@DominicMcGregor Showed you're ignorance at the end, it's not the time saving it's the capacity. We're not great at major projects, but it is needed. And we're also bad at building business cases. HS2 will generate far more than it costs over it's life.

We don’t need faster trains to London. I deeply believe that. The difference from 2 hours to 1 hour 30 is nominal. What we need is a better experience. There’s a psychological concept called temporal perception. Time feels longer when you’re frustrated and shorter when you’re absorbed. That buffering wheel. The email that won’t send. The Teams call dropping mid-sentence. That’s not a 2 hour journey. That feels like 4. Give every passenger reliable WiFi and a plug socket and the journey shrinks not on the timetable, but in the mind. Now @elonmusk & @Starlink can now do this. So why are we waiting. HS2 cost billions to save 30 minutes. Better WiFi would give that time back every single day.

@GBX_Press America uses those bases to assert it's dominance far out from their own borders. Without them the influence shrinks back closer to home and puts them more at risk. It would be an act of self sabotage

It will be upgrades, warehouse, north stand etc. But the rest of the finances showed a £17m profit, which will counter previous losses in the permitted £100m average loss allowed over 3 years. So more room this summer

@ChimeWhistle Why would you compare a new train to a refurbishment of a 25 year old one. Amtrak guage is much bigger allowing far more interior space so of course there's no comparison.

Thoughts on how that compares to the refurbished CrossCountry Voyager. Don't mention the catering trolley 😀
