It’s extremely good that Anthropic has not backed down, and it’s siginficant that OpenAI has taken a similar stance. In the future, there will be much more challenging situations of this nature, and it will be critical for the relevant leaders to rise up to the occasion, for fierce competitors to put their differences aside. Good to see that happen today.

Main lore around the origin of MapReduce was that we were rewriting our indexing pipeline for the search system, and we realized that lots of the different phases were conceptually simple but required large scale processing (extract link text from each page, identify language for each page, compute checksum of contents to identify duplicates, etc). Each phase needed to be parallelized, made robust to machine failures, etc. Squinting at each of the phases we came up with MapReduce as an abstraction where we could have an implementation that would do all the complex work under the abstraction boundary, and where the expression of the operations could be nice and simple.

Very proud to see the progress across so many areas. Great to see @GeminiApp hit 750M monthly active users, and the use of our Gemini models across many products and Cloud surfaces is strong: 10B tokens/minute is 166M tokens/sec (TPUs!), or ~1750 tokens/person on earth per day.

When you ask Gemini to include scientific sources, you will now see proper APA-style inline citations and detailed reference sections, which should help students and researchers everywhere. We're just starting to roll this out with prompts that are clearly scientific in nature, so you might not see it everywhere yet. Let us know what you think!

Joint Statement: Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year. After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google's Al technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users. Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards.

In 2024, I was delighted to be a co-author on an Arxiv paper on"Shaping AI's Impact on Billions of Lives", covering areas we thought AI would have significant impact on the world. We cover AI's potential impact on employment, education, healthcare, (mis)information, media, national security, and science, and propose 18 potential moonshot research directions in these areas to maximize positive impact and minimize downsides. We’ve been intensely cooking Gemini 3 for a while now, and we’re so excited and proud to share the results with you all. Of course it tops the leaderboards, including @arena, HLE, GPQA etc, but beyond the benchmarks it’s been by far my favourite model to use for its style and depth, and what it can do to help with everyday tasks.
