@ModestJS @Protestia Retarded, right? There were a few other things, weekly fasting and a requirement to log so many hours each week in the church's prayer room, but they justified the pricetag saying you'd be more inclined to keep to the program if you felt like you "invested" in it.

@ModestJS @Protestia In that context, we had weekly classes, bi-weekly small groups, and regular conversations with one of the pastors. 4 years later, I come to Orthodoxy, have one conversation with my priest, and realize that was more discipleship than anything I've ever had before.

@IlliniRefugee @Protestia Our baptisms can last longer than most protestant weddings (also a sacrament for us). If you're wanting to use the space outside of the normal service schedule, expect to help cover the costs. If you want it to be free, do it during the liturgy while everyone else is there.

@Incense_Iron @Protestia Difference is that Baptism is a sacrament unlike the things you listed (yea I know RCC and EO have other sacraments, not the point). Would anyone take a church seriously if they demanded $20 before someone takes communion? Alcohol is expensive. Answer is no.

@DavidTellesu5u @Protestia Marriage is also a sacrament. Would you pay a church to use their space for the wedding? Our baptisms can take an hour+, and they require a priest/deacon/servers/chanters. They're big events and usually have a catered dinner after. It's not a five second dunk in a pool.

The Old Testament sacrifice wasn't being punished by God. Neither was the goat sent out from Israel's presence. No where do we see God punishing the sacrifice in order to forgive Israel. Nor do we see God incapable of forgiving without a sacrifice. This will upset some.

Grandma’s back in town, and I stopped by my parents’ house to see her reading St. Paisios talk about demons. Good times…

@dtbanimator My priest gives these to every convert to read and take notes, so maybe buy one to digest every few months. I bought the set for myself just so that she would have something to read while she's at our parents' house (OP is my brother). She's really taken a liking to St. Paisios.

One thing the Saints say is that the demons watch us to see how we react. So if they fill us with negative thoughts or images, the Saints say not to contort our faces or react in any negative way, because this gives them positive feedback that their attacks are successfully hurting us. Funny enough, psychology has discovered something parallel, that acting out a physical ritual with a negative thought gives it more strength. Hence, things OCD and addiction. Even more so, we can discourage the demons and fulfill the providential reason why this torment was allowed by thanking God, as wild as that sounds. "Lord, this is unpleasant, but I thank you for this fuel for prayer that pushes me right to you. 'Without temptation, no one can because saved.' Glory to God in all things!" And then we train our minds and hearts to more and more consistently respond to those crosses with thanksgiving, which leads to deeper healing and positive reinforcement.

@FrankArgaez It already is in Orthodoxy. What you're speaking about is what our saints refer to as the one-world religion of the antichrist.
