Additionally, in the game between Tottenham and Liverpool, VAR referee Darren England — whose decision led to Luis Díaz’s wrongfully disallowed goal for offside — had been in the UAE less than 24 hours prior to the match. Dan Cook, the assistant VAR referee in the same game, was also present in the UAE with Mr. England. The referees receiving payment from the United Arab Emirates, the owners of Manchester City, and consistently making the wrong calls in their favor, leave a sour taste in supporters’ mouths.
