Okinawa - 21 May 1945
Combat medic and conscientious objector Desmond Doss is evacuated after being wounded by fragments of a grenade that he kicked away.
His heroism had already been evident at Guam and Leyte (two Bronze Stars), but he would surpass himself at Okinawa and become a recipient of the Medal of Honor.

Private First Class Desmond Doss survived the war and received the Medal of Honor from President Harry S. Truman later that year. He was honorably discharged from the military in 1946. #OTD

“Tend to your faith not just when you’re broken, but when you’re whole.”
Eric Church returned to his alma mater, UNC Chapel Hill, and gave graduates a message bigger than music:
The country star told graduates that faith is the “low E” of life: the foundation every chord rests on, especially when the world gets overwhelming.

Excellent choice! Especially if you are looking for a movie that gives you hope in humanity again. I can’t tell you how many people watched Hacksaw Ridge during Covid.

That’s what makes Hacksaw Ridge so powerful. Desmond Doss proved that bravery isn’t only about fighting; sometimes it’s about standing by your convictions and risking your life to save others.
Running back into danger again and again without a weapon took unbelievable courage. Truly one of those stories that stays with you long after the movie ends.

🛡️ Desmond Doss: The WWII Hero Who Fought Without a Weapon
A devout Seventh-day Adventist who refused to kill or carry a gun, Desmond Doss joined the U.S. Army as a combat medic.
During the horrific Battle of Okinawa at Hacksaw Ridge in 1945, while under constant enemy fire, Doss single-handedly rescued 75 wounded soldiers — lowering many down a 400-foot cliff using only ropes and his faith.
He became the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor, awarded by President Truman himself.
No gun. Just courage and conviction.
His story became the Oscar-winning film Hacksaw Ridge. True hero. 🇺🇸

Missing my mom this Mother’s Day weekend. She taught me everything about cooking and real hospitality—pies, cinnamon buns, bread, and making people feel at home.
Lost her in 2019, way too soon. Thinking of everyone missing their mom, too.
