Magnitude 6.0 earthquake strikes near #Metehara, #Oromia; no significant damage reported A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Metehara town, Oromia region, on Friday, February 14, at 11:28 p.m., Volcano Discovery reported. The tremor’s epicenter was about 6.5 km north-northeast of the town at a depth of 10 km. The report indicated that the shallow depth made the quake more strongly felt in surrounding areas. However, it noted that "no significant damage or impact is expected" and that no alert had been issued. Authorities have not yet provided an official statement. The earthquake comes amid ongoing seismic activity affecting Ethiopia’s #Afar, #Amhara, and #Oromia regions. WHO Ethiopia reported that recent tremors have impacted 90,000 people, with two injuries recorded. Authorities have evacuated over 75,000 people from high-risk areas, including 55,000 in Afar and 20,000 in Oromia. Nine health facilities have also been damaged, and humanitarian efforts are ongoing. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), around 261 earthquakes have been recorded since September, primarily in the Fantale area of the Main Ethiopian Rift Valley. The tremors have led to the collapse of homes and the displacement of thousands of residents.

2-different rivers with -one name -waterfalls-“Gotu”, in two separate countries. One Waso River#Borana, the other the Awash River#Karrayyu! The origin of these pastoralist communities speaks louder and the images tell richer story

International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists
Rangelands are important part of the ecosystem around the world. Read more from @icimod about the role of rangelands for the mountainous communities.
ICIMOD@icimod

#Rangelands are unsung heroes: vital for water, carbon, nature and breathtakingly diverse cultural groups. Grasslands alone store about 30% of China’s terrestrial carbon stocks. These areas are home to 10% of the population in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region – some of the most unique and irreplaceable cultural traditions. #ClimateChange, #degradation, and conflicts threaten these crucial ecosystems and the communities they support. To safeguard unique cultures, #biodiversity, and these important #watersheds we need greater recognition of their significance. The @UN General Assembly unanimously voted for 2026 to be the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (#IYRP). #ICIMOD has for close to 30 years worked with #rangelands and #pastoralists of the #HinduKushHimalaya region, and has a dedicated team working to transform perceptions of the significance of and risks to high-altitude pastures and #wetlands, biodiversity and cultures and promote conservation, restoration and management of these #landscapes for nature, people and carbon.
