We need heat shields to protect us, since we use the air to slow us down as we return to Earth. From orbital speed, it gets to 1650°C / 3000°F. From the Moon: 2750°C / 5000°F. For yesterday's Starship suborbital test flight, peak was 1450°C / 2600°F. Great to see the @SpaceX progress over the last 3 flights. That feeling when you place a camera down in a location and expect it to die...but not only does it survive, it delivers. This camera was placed right next to Starhopper, the closest proximity I have ever had a camera to Starship to this point. I think we got to see the consequences of the lack of full blast shielding. Boostback probably would have gone fine minus one engine had this single engine, either E5 or E6, not had an energetic event and took out 16 of its neighboring engines.

@Robotbeat Really couldn't ask for a much better start to V3. Compare it to the start of V2...

Honestly, after the RVac engine out (which presumably precluded Raptor relight test, put extra propellant in the header tanks guaranteeing a fiery tipover), everything else went as well as it could possibly have gone. The Starlink deploys were fantastic. Reentry was very good.
