Pete Shelley sharing his philosophy with Tony Wilson in Woolworths cafe in 1978. Read about Pete Shelley in Paul Hanley’s book ‘Sixteen Again: How Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks Changed Manchester Music (and me)’ youtube.com/watch?v=hl-3o1…

@hanleyPa @Route_News We had fun times in the offices, always plenty of badges to give out and cassettes to listen to
English

@JoeyHeaden @Route_News We may well have. But I was a fourteen year old kid - probably more of an annoyance than anything else!
English

@hanleyPa @Route_News We might have bumped into each other there. Did you ever see Steve Morrissey in the offices? He’d hang out by himself in the corner, using the phone and absorbing what the music biz was all about. We’d often invite him to one of the local pubs but I don’t remember him joining us
English

@JoeyHeaden @Route_News Me and my mates used to hang round the office on Newton St. all the time hoping to meet up with the band. It worked a few times!
English

@hanleyPa @Route_News I went there with Pete, Francis and probably Eric Random. Granada just let us occupy the tables in camera shot and probably supplied us with free tea. We spent a lot of time in Woolworths caff or Virgin around the corner in Lever St or New Hormones offices in Newton Street
English

@JoeyHeaden @Route_News Amazing! Were you with Pete or Tony (or Granada)?
English

@JonSavage1966 Very sad news. Used to go visit him in a house in London he shared with Ray Stevenson and Steve Walsh. He even gave Manicured Noise one of his drum kits.

A review of Pete’s solo career. The karaoke quote in the headline is from Pete and not me

@Route_News @hanleyPa I’m sat on Tony’s left, opposite Francis, enjoying multiple mugs of tea and Rothmans. We spent a lot of time in Woolworths back then.

@FishHutBlackDog Those t-shirts were part of the merch on that mini tour. Mine is very threadbare now and will probably be retired soon 🥲
English

@JoeyHeaden His t-shirt! I've just missed out on one of those on eBay.
English

@JoeyHeaden @YouTube Whenever I saw them they were supporting Buzzcocks or Siouxsie. Around this time at the Circus I would imagine Buzzcocks most likely?
English

@JoeyHeaden around 2:41 on this they cut to the crowd and it is dark and dim but I think I see you even though you were pretty dark but never dim.

@KevinAdams @hanleyPa We just did it because we could and had fun doing it. The first XL1 track I did was Telephone Operator and I vividly recall the first time I showed it to Pete, Martin Rushent and his father. Everyone’s jaw dropped and from then on it was demo’d to everyone who came to the studio
English

@JoeyHeaden @hanleyPa That's amazing, it's hard to imagine how ground breaking it must have seemed in 1983. In many ways apps like Spotify have only recently caught up with sync'd lyrics, even then they're not always available or sync'd, or as good to watch 😄
That Spectrum typeface too 🖤
English

@KevinAdams @hanleyPa There are a couple of recordings on YouTube of the whole thing using the vinyl and an original spectrum m.youtube.com/watch?v=y4X2FG…
English

@JoeyHeaden @hanleyPa Great read that. I’ve downloaded the zip and off to have a play with an emulator later. Still fetching the Spectrum from the loft for a proper go when the album arrives though 😄
English

@hanleyPa @KevinAdams I have a lot of Pete stories obviously, some of which will never be told in public. He’s still missed every day. Nice podcast btw, I’ve been listening from season 1 😁
English

@JoeyHeaden @KevinAdams That’s a fabulous article. May well quote that if we do another edition of the book

@hanleyPa @KevinAdams Pete had a lot of input, he always joked that we invented karaoke. Lots more details here headen.com/XL1.htm
English

@JoeyHeaden @KevinAdams Really? How much input did Pete have?
