@AdamantxYves @gaywonk 😅 It's more that they won't waste money on performative nonsense, like £1.6Bn on the Bibby Stockholm or £700M on the Rwanda scheme

@AdamantxYves @gaywonk So do I, and I agree they are far more right wing than I want. But they at least aren't only dealing in sound-bites and grandstanding idiotic policies like the Rwanda asylum seeker nonsense.

@Jonty_W @gaywonk You still have a right-wing government. I've seen the transphobic shit that they endorsed. I've seen the austerity. I've seen the hostility towards immigrants. You got rid of a Tory government, but you did not get rid of a right-wing government. Sorry, but I want more for us.

@AdamantxYves @gaywonk Whether she will do anything to help the Palestinian people, I don't know - but right now I think a focus on domestic issues will do her well in the election.

@AdamantxYves @gaywonk I'm British and am glad to say we just got rid of a right wing government that has been leaning in to the Republican playbook of racism, misogyny , and zero policy. The Labour party did a good job of not giving any ammunition to the right wing. I think Harris is doing the same.

@tomhfh Maybe it's the fun people who like to get away from the loud music to somewhere they can chat? If pubs voted their outdoor areas as an extension of their floorspace, not just "the smoking area", maybe they would be even more utilised?

I don’t smoke. I’ve never smoked. But I love a smoking area on a night out. It’s the place for good chats, phone signal, and eardrum rest. I can’t see it being the same if it’s devoid of smokers - who tend to be disproportionately fun people.

@womenpostingws I gave very similar advice to a girl at a sports club yesterday after she'd been followed at a train station. Most older women have been through this sort of shit, and most aren't putting up with it any more.

@peterjhasson @FreeBeacon @SaysSimonson @ChuckRossDC Oh man, thanks for raising this important point - when I applied for my Senior Engineer role I forgot to mention the job I had selling ice-cream at a safari park one summer as a student. My boss probably wouldn't have hired me if he knew! 😅😅

@disappoptimism Is Stew under the impression that the planes that attacked New York were still flyable after hitting the twin towers?

@oldfarmhorace @daveoneillsf @timolarch This is an interesting one, because it less to questions about fair compensation for your work. I like to think if I was running a company that was making billions in profit per year, I would pay my staff a salary that enables them to live comfortably, not just min wage.

The problem with the 1000 people is that they require far more in the way of government services. Probably benefiting more than they put in. Billionaires may pay tax at a lower rate but they pay much more tax. I think in the UK the top 1% pay 30% of tax, the next 9% another 30%. The other 90% who consume most of the government services pay only 40% of tax. They rely on the top 10%.

@oldfarmhorace @timolarch Interesting to hear (pinch of salt for AI generated answers), I wouldn't have guessed it was so high. Does make you think about how strongly economic confidence is affected by that 10%!

Tenuous because from chatgpt, but see this,The vast majority of the money supply growth is driven by the private sector, particularly through the commercial banking system. Estimates suggest that over 90% of the broad money supply (like M2 or M4) in the UK is created by commercial banks through lending. The remaining portion is directly influenced by the government and central bank actions, such as currency issuance and QE.In summary, the proportion of the annual money supply growth that is not directly by the government in the UK is approximately 90% or more.

@oldfarmhorace @timolarch Do you have any stats for the proportion of new money created through government spending compared to banking loans? I googled it a few days ago but couldn't find clear data.

@Jonty_W @timolarch Savings are never locked up. Money works unless it is under the bed in a box. In fact savings in a bank means new money can be created and a multiple of that money issued as loans.

I’m guessing you aren’t a capitalist? Imagine you work for Nvidia where 76% of staff are millionaires and 1 in 3 of them are worth USD20m or more. Many will hold the stock and borrow against it to buy or upgrade houses etc. This wealth creation by market forces helps drive economies and increases the money supply.

@oldfarmhorace @timolarch It's not 'working' anywhere. Most money is not invested in new businesses; they are putting it in stocks for companies that contribute little to society apart from delivering a dividend or share price gain for the people who already have money.

@timolarch Do you really believe there are vast vaults full of cash in Cayman? Trust me, that money will be working in an economy somewhere.

@BBCNewsnight How much of a tough choice was it for Starmer to promise Zelensky £3bn a year, every year, "for as long as it takes". Three billion pounds of our money. £3 billion. Every year. This government is, in its honeymoon period, already proving crueler than tories.

The Rwanda scheme is over, it cost £700m and not a single person was deported. Who got all the money? It's time to get it back.

@matnewts @newt7215 FWIW the Zoe got 5 stars in 2013. The latest NCAP zero stars is because the driver collision avoidance assists are not standard features and NCAP now says they have to be mandatory. It's a very political score by NCAP...

@Sickboy_Mcsatan @brrrake 10 years earlier than that, it would have been a cool couple of years and great for your CV. But with a young family I think you made the right choice.

@brrrake 20 odd years ago I was offered a job as trackside IT manager with an F1 team. I nearly took it, but sat down & worked out the hours expected, salary etc, and decided against it. I still regret it. If I didn't have a young family I probably would have done it.
