@surajyengde What about the statutes of Mahatma Gandhi taken down by students in various parts of Africa for his racist hierarchical views while lawyering in South Africa? What about his anti-caste justice stances towards Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution?

@pranjan12781 Those who ask Q's can also be scrutinised (like Arnab G), & an elected rep enjoys the legitimacy of the people (via democracy); s/he is not required to dance to the tunes of unelected activists. That's not the latter's entitlement, but a privilege.

I don't know the context; however, I will say this: if diplomats can pass off anything as diplomacy, or worse, believe they are beyond questioning/not answerable, then journalists are entitled to some journalistic "activism". I guess it is important to scrutinize those who wield public power, not those who ask questions.
Happymon Jacob@HappymonJacob

You ask uncomfortable questions to a diplomat: That is journalism. The diplomat answers the questions in a manner he can: That is diplomacy. You heckle the diplomat repeatedly & stage a walkout: That’s activism, not journalism.

@anup_malani Perhaps the lack of adapting to changing gender norms (infused via economic growth) & women's demands... They couple but do not go for more children unless demands or met or coupling among mis-matches nber.org/papers/w34268

@pranjan12781 Is it any different from USA which also prides itself as syncretism. Infact, increasing syncretism by every passing decade, century from 18th century onwards.

What's India's biggest strength? A one-word answer is 'syncretism'. I take a lot of pride in the fact that the Indian civilization is a rich amalgamation of diverse cultures, traditions, languages, religions, customs, cuisines and everything else that one can imagine. It is precisely because of this syncretism that Europeans found it difficult to explicate Indian nationhood. The European version of nationalism in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries was based on homogenization and uniformity. They constructed a nation in monolithic terms, using common markers of religion, language, and culture. Our freedom struggle against colonial rule and the making of the Indian Constitution, which institutionalized 'syncretism', gave rise to a new concept of inclusive nationalism in contrast to the Western and European conception of exclusive nationalism. It is the fundamental duty of every patriotic Indian to not just preserve, but also nurture and celebrate Indian syncretism.

@MeganTStevenson marginal returns to shutting down all social sciences & diverting the resources to medical research is very very low

Am I the only social scientist that thinks the marginal returns to social science research are pretty low? I mean, I enjoy it & think it's interesting. But I don't think it’s improving the world much. Imo society oversupplies social science and undersupplies medical research.
Chris Blattman@cblatts

Some of us just dodged the pissing match about randomized trials versus macro development because we believe the marginal returns to research in both areas are pretty high

@kareem_carr @nntaleb Lack of pressure applies then to all disciplines that are not applied. This lack of pressing problems is applicable to all Humanities, maths, zoology, geology, anthro, education, well most of the disciplines.

@nntaleb Epidemiology is expected to reduce disease. Physics is tasked with explaining material reality. The issue with economics is there aren't any pressing problems that *must* be solved, and without that pressure they just do whatever seems fun, so the theory feels more useless.

Some fields work in theory but not in practice. Some fields work in practice but not theory. The uniqueness of economics is that it works in neither theory nor practice.

@drSujayShad @MakrandParanspe It's a matter of perspective. I agree w/ you. But there is a difference b/n organisers not attending which I feel is cruel and students not attending (who are entitled to not attend should they choose to). If that 1 or 2 people who invited her aren't there, I agree w/ you.

@MakrandParanspe @smitaprakash @du_mirandahouse What do you mean not acceptable? Or not done? Now are you going to tell whom people can dislike or not? Its between the institute and her. They might apologise or justify. Not sure how can you stop them doing what they did. These things happen sometimes.

@meenakshibhanja @arunk_patel Ah. So we are on the same side to believe, students have no obligation to be there. They don't find her worth their time. We should communicate this to Smita. So she's only angry about the organisers absence and not students

To the Principal, staff and students of Miranda College, Delhi University, you need to respect the Chief Guest you invite for your events. I was there for a no show! I have posted the videos and pix here so that you learn that tardiness equals to disrespect. No staff and 4-5 students. Flow chart & evidence posted

@cbokhove I see. I struggled to see what the N for each subject was. But wierd that they didn't show it upfront and next to the graph. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Can't agree more with what you say, esp if N<10... means literally nothing. The truth can go anyway.

@Kalyan_KumarK Sorry, think misunderstanding. The analysis itself has N<10 for education research articles and saw some economists disparaging education research as a field based on it. I'm not commenting on economists' studies but their claims about education research.

@cbokhove But this reproduction paper is not by economists. It's sociology, biology etc. I'd be very surprised to see any econ paper make such a claim ever, given it being rigorous of all social sciences (which some don't even think it should be called as a soc science)
