Understanding how altering one movement will affect the rest of your golf swing is crucial for anyone who’s considering making swing changes. Far too often, I see golfers make changes because they don’t like the way something looks aesthetically without fully understanding whether it will help or hurt them. I’ll use the case below as an example. Adding a lateral push towards the target with your pelvis, while keeping your upper body behind the ball, is a great way to get the hand path to drop in transition, shallow the club, and add trail side bend. You can see that from the visual above. While that sounds great, not everyone needs to do it. You might hear about “weight transfer” or see videos online about copying Rory’s transition, but it might actually penalize some of you. If you’re already swinging from the inside, this isn’t the best idea because it will amplify that tendency, potentially to a point of extremes. If your hand path is already behind you or on the deeper side, again, it’ll keep them there and you might get stuck. Now, If you fade the ball too much or your hand path kicks way out in front of you in the downswing, then it’s a great idea to add this type of adjustment because it will directly offset that tendency. Simple! Going forward, I’ll be diving into concepts like this in way more depth so that you’ll never second guess a swing change again. Remember, golf is a subjective game. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!
