Before you buy SpaceX at IPO, ask: what does xAI's safety record mean for your investment? Spoiler: xAI ranks behind every leading frontier AI developer on safety. Our report with @EncodeAction, @GuidelightAI, and @TheMidasProj breaks down the risk.

SpaceX is about to go public, and inside it now is xAI, a frontier AI lab that ranks behind its peers in every major published assessment of AI safety practices. What does that mean for investors?
Our new report with @GuidelightAI, @EncodeAction, and @LASST_law is out today.

There are better tools than the CFAA for the accountability norms AI agents need.

The court's CFAA analysis gives us pause. The CFAA is a criminal statute aimed at hacking. Extending it to software that accessed a site with a user's own valid credentials, at that user's direction, raises serious questions about interoperability and internet freedom.
We support AI agents identifying themselves. We don't support platforms having free rein to block them once identified, and an agent acting on a user's express permission shouldn't be criminal conduct.

In December, LASST and @EncodeAction filed an amicus brief in Amazon v. Perplexity, partially supporting Amazon's preliminary injunction motion. Our point was narrow: as AI agents grow more capable, website operators need ways to distinguish agent traffic from humans for security and accountability.
The district court granted the injunction in March. Perplexity has appealed to the Ninth Circuit — and we won't be filing again.

Despite the extensive media attention and public debate, we still don’t know what's actually in the Pentagon’s contracts with xAI, Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
Yesterday, we filed suit to find out.

The OpenAI Foundation commits $1B+ in year one: Alzheimer's research, AI safety testing, biosecurity, jobs programs.
Serious ambition. And we give serious kudos. But we have a few questions.

The Pentagon doesn't want you to see its AI contracts with xAI, OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic.
We filed a FOIA request for them on behalf of @samfbiddle at @theintercept. We asked for expedited processing. The Pentagon said no.
We appealed. The response? “Due to an extremely heavy FOIA workload, we are unable to complete your appeal within the statutory time requirement.”
We’re continuing to fight for these records. New on the LASST blog: lasst.org/2026/03/24/the…

A New AIWI Resource: What Happens When AI Insiders Speak Up? Does It Have an Impact?
Hear the Stories of Those Who Speak Up...
Today, we're publishing an in-depth case study resource documenting known whistleblowing in AI and Big Tech: six in-depth profiles covering OpenAI, Google, Facebook (Meta), Microsoft, and Tesla, alongside summaries of sixteen anonymous cases from 2025 to 2026, which helped bring misconduct and wrongdoing to light.
If you know someone inside a frontier AI company, share this evolving resource with them, because one of the most useful things an insider can have, before they face a decision to raise concerns, is evidence of what that decision has looked like for others: what they achieved, what they lost, and what support was available to them.

Our friends at Tech Justice Law Project are hiring a Senior Litigator.
Right now, there is a massive gap between the pace of technology deployment and the legal frameworks meant to protect people from its harms. TJLP is closing that gap.
If you're an experienced litigator who wants to shape the future of tech accountability, this is the role.

OpenAI updated its DoD contract language on surveillance. It's an improvement, but problems remain: no protections against use for autonomous weapons, targeting only "intentional" and "deliberate" surveillance leaves a lot of wiggle room for activities you and I may still consider mass surveillance, and no protections for U.S. immigrants or citizens abroad.
We remain concerned. 📑Read our full analysis here: lasst.org/2026/03/03/ope…

OpenAI published contract language from its Pentagon deal and said it protects against mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
We're lawyers. We read the fine print.
The language doesn't do what OpenAI says it does. A thread on why 🧵

OpenAI released a substantially expanded Whistleblowing Policy – from 3 to 13 pages.
Most comprehensive among frontier AI companies. AIWI finds significant progress: 8 of 13 AIWI recommendations addressed, including 3 of 5 critical items.
⚠️ Critical for AI employees: Internal WB policies ≠ legally binding contracts. Get independent legal counsel before using internal channels.

🚨Trump's AI chip export controls aren't just bad policy— they're illegal, argues LASST's Vivian Dong in @lawfare.
The new AI chip export controls cross a constitutional line: they're revenue-raising measures disguised as national security policy. Export decisions must be merit-based, not a way to fill government coffers.

AI agents are starting to act, not just respond.
That’s why LASST and @EncodeAction submitted an amicus brief in Amazon v. Perplexity: autonomous AI agents interacting with platforms should clearly identify themselves. Transparency is accountability.

LASST and @EncodeAction filed an amicus brief in Amazon v. Perplexity. AI agents now browse, click, and act at superhuman speed. Without self-ID, websites can’t apply safeguards or trace harm.
We’re pushing for agent identification — sites shouldn’t have to guess who’s human.
