For prostitution to exist as a monetary exchange, women must be commodified as products in the stream of commerce. In commercial terms, I have a problem with both supply (too many women live in poverty) and demand (too many men believe they have a right to sexual access). Both facts require that women be subordinate. That is why the radical feminist position on prostitution is abolition. Abolition is the only way to address the root cause of prostitution i.e. personal and structural inequality. At some point you have to ask the question that the psychological architecture is specifically designed to prevent you from asking: What has American global dominance actually been for? Not in the speeches. Not in the official rationale. Not in the framing of the State Department or the op-ed pages or the foreign policy think tanks that exist to produce intellectual justifications for things that were already decided. What has it actually, materially, functionally been for? The Marshall Plan rebuilt Europe, specifically to create markets and prevent the spread of an ideology that threatened American capital. The NATO alliance extended American military infrastructure across a continent. The Bretton Woods system made the dollar the world's reserve currency, a structural advantage that has extracted value from the global economy ever since. The IMF and World Bank disbursed loans conditioned on structural adjustment programs that opened developing economies to American corporate penetration while dismantling the public sectors that protected ordinary people. The democracy promotion was the cover. The freedom agenda was the packaging. Underneath it: Markets. Access. Control. A global system organized to produce maximum returns for American capital and maximum dependency for everyone else. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is documented in American policy records, in the private communications of the people who designed these systems, in the words of people like George Kennan, who wrote in 1948 that America needed to maintain "the disparity" between American wealth and the rest of the world and should "cease to talk about vague, unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of living standards, and democratization." He wrote that. In a government document. In 1948. The people who built the empire never confused themselves about what it was for. They left that confusion for their citizens. Their citizens accepted it gratefully, because the alternative, looking clearly at what the empire actually is, what it has actually done, and who has actually paid for the American standard of living, is a confrontation that the psychological furniture was specifically built to prevent.

Woman: human being or profit centre? “The Nordic Model approach decriminalises those who are prostituted and provides them with support, genuine alternatives and routes out. It also cracks down on pimps and traffickers, and makes buying sex a criminal offence — with the key aim of changing men’s attitudes. This approach is founded in the socialist feminist understanding of prostitution as an institution of oppression that has been used for centuries by the capitalist system to co-opt men, and to ensure the subordination of women and the division of the working class. More recently women have become the locus of wealth extraction as the global capitalists have turned to mining women and girls’ bodies for the primitive accumulation of capital through the industrialisation of prostitution, porn, egg harvesting and surrogacy. The global capitalists have been so successful in selling the sexual use and abuse of women and girls as entertainment to ordinary men that the global sex industry makes profits so huge that even Amazon’s seem like small change in comparison. However, the Nordic Model was not developed simply from theory. Rather it came out of practical research. Feminists in Sweden conducted large-scale research on prostitution — talking extensively to people both selling and buying sex. The women selling sex told of their paths into prostitution, about the men who bought them, about their relationships with pimps and drugs, about how prostitution affected them and the violence and shame they experienced, and about their survival strategies. What the researchers found was that prostitution is an extreme, concentrated version of the general relationship between the sexes. It therefore makes no sense to punish the women — because their choices are limited and getting out of prostitution once embedded in it is hard, and sometimes impossible. It became clear to the researchers that prostitution exists because men buy sex. So, if they were to reduce prostitution (and the trafficking and misery associated with it), they realised they must challenge men to change their belief that they have the right to buy sex from another human being. And that’s the whole point of the law. Just as the law against smoking in pubs is not about demonising or criminalising smokers — it is primarily about changing attitudes and behaviour. The approach was first introduced in Sweden in 1999 and since then a number of other countries have followed suit. Each country has framed the law slightly differently and with different degrees of commitment and success. There have been endless attempts to sabotage it — mostly because men, including so-called socialist men, do not want to give up the right granted them by the capitalist elites to sexual access to their more unfortunate sisters, and many women resist seeing the reality of a system that defines themselves as not quite human, as commodities for men’s use and abuse…” To continue reading, see the link in the next tweet.

The Nordic Model vs. Full Decriminalisation “To understand what is an appropriate solution to a problem, we first need a realistic understanding of what that problem actually involves. So what is prostitution, really? Many people assume it’s normal consensual sex and that it typically involves a negotiation about what will happen. And there’s an assumption that the two parties – the woman and the punter – are equally placed in this negotiation. I’m going to draw on the words of prostitution survivors in the Nordic Model Now! group, to show that this simply isn’t true. First Emily. She got into financial difficulties when she was at university and swallowed the idea being promoted all around her that “sex work” is a real job, good money, a no brainer even, for cash-strapped students like herself. So she started in prostitution. This is what she said: “I was sold a complete lie. It’s not easy money. To the buyer, you are nothing more than an object for their consumption, not an actual human being with emotions. You’re expected to just put up with whatever they want to do and say to you. The exchange of money makes them feel entitled to treat you however they like, with no regard for your feelings or consent.” Next, Harriet, who also turned to prostitution after a series of catastrophes left her at risk of homelessness. She described it like this: “People think prostitution is about having consensual sex for money. It’s not. Those men don’t want to pay for that. They paid me and then used me however they wanted. I was beaten with objects until I bled; spat at; anally raped; gang raped; passed around at sex parties like a toy, men slipping off their condoms; I was shouted at, threatened, choked, told to look like I enjoyed it or he’d take the money back… I was scared every single second.” Sian echoed this when she said, “The reality is that you do as the punter wants or you’ll very quickly be without work – and may even end up in hospital.” Esther, put it like this: “The punter is king. It’s a total myth that you can negotiate with him as an equal when you’re in a private space, operating in a competitive market, and under the threat of bad online reviews, reprisals from the brothel manager, and/or violence from your pimp… It’s nothing like the type of exchange you’d have with a sexual partner outside the sex trade.”” To read more, follow the link in the next tweet.
