In case anyone needs a refresher: human decisions will matter more, not less, in the age of AI. Humans decide the values that guide AI systems & determine what data is used to train them. Responsible AI requires ethical innovation from the very start. bit.ly/46TmyJv

@M_Botbol_Baum There is no “try” here - the purpose of any phase 1/2 in this space is TO establish safety. There is no try.

This investment by the US Federal Government in charting and funding new paths of genome editing to the clinic is EXACTLY the right step towards expanding the public health footprint of #CRISPR in genetic disease. The NIH is supporting academia-led paths of editing to IND!
Somatic Cell Genome Editing (SCGE) Outreach@somaticediting

The #SCGE Program is excited to enter Phase 2 with newly funded projects that will focus on translating safe and effective genome editing therapeutics into the clinic! Read more: bit.ly/477eBRd #geneediting #genetherapy #clinicaltrials

I am sorry it came to this & feel bad for Tessier-Lavigne. He was (largely) exonerated but I think he's right that his resignation now is best for Stanford. & continuing could not have been any fun for HIM. He's a man of integrity, but, like all, not perfect. I wish him the best.
Krzysztof Potempa@BRAINCURES

“This is enough exoneration that he can go out with dignity. … It’s probably better for the university to get a new leader. And I think Marc is certainly smart enough to realize that he’s not indispensable, nobody’s indispensable,” says @HankGreelyLSJU science.org/content/articl…

@UrnovFyodor I would say... try ...to establish safety since uncertainty is on both sides ...and the social reception of disruptive representations unpredictable...

@M_Botbol_Baum The only way to establish long term safety and efficacy of any genetic medicine is to treat individuals with severe disease in clinical trials. No one "promises safety" - the objective of any phase 1/2 in this field is to ESTABLISH safety.

@UrnovFyodor Thanks for the precision but it is important to mention those with severe diseases as condition to experiment with those innovative drugs.

An unsurprisingly good column by @carlzimmer on the recent embryo models preprints. I have 3 qualms, tho. 1st, he says the scientists say these aren't "true" embryos & could never give rise to babies. I believe that's what they say BUT a) legally, what IS an embryo depends on

@antonioregalado And it is also so expensive whose child could... benefit ...if there is any benefice at all ! it is a form of human experimentation transferring the risk on the patient.

FDA approves a gene therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, limited to younger kids. Data for benefit seemed to be equivocal. Maybe some 'better than nothing' reasoning here. yahoo.com/news/us-fda-ap…

Nature provides a corrective to last week's confused headline in a British tabloid about synthetic human embryos, aka embryo models made from stem cells (a) Synthetic human embryos are not new (b) latest batch lay claim to enhanced verisimilitude. nature.com/articles/d4158…

@hannahdev It’s a great piece, Hannah. Lots of activity with papers to follow. My only quibble is with the moniker. As #SCBEMs are NOT embryos, would it be possible to stop referring to them as “synthetic embryos”? @ISSCR
