Many people don’t know this,but lions once roamed freely across several parts of Northern Nigeria,including areas around present-day Adamawa, Bauchi,Borno,Kaduna,Kano and Niger State. The lions found in Nigeria are part of the rare West African lion species,one of the most endangered lion populations left in the world today. Sadly,they’ve almost completely disappeared from the country. Today,the few remaining lions are believed to survive mostly inside protected areas like Kainji Lake National Park and possibly parts of Gashaka Gumti National Park. What really happened? Over the years,forests and open savannahs were cleared for farming, roads and settlements. Hunting also played a major role, especially during the colonial era when lions were hunted for sport, trade and protection. As animals like antelope and buffalo started disappearing, lions also struggled because their food sources became scarce. Human population growth pushed wildlife farther away until places that once had lions became busy communities and towns. It’s actually sad to think that many Nigerians today may go their entire lives without ever seeing a wild lion inside Nigeria, even though lions were once part of the country’s natural history and ecosystem. Do you think Nigeria can still protect what’s left of its wildlife,or have we already lost too much?

So Anambra that has one of the biggest and busiest markets in the country was not approved for a seaport project; Not even a South-Eastern state. But Lagos and Ondo States (South-West region), along with Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers states (South-South) all made the list.
