Yatri Sathi, by the IT&E Department, Government of West Bengal, has received the Award of Excellence and the running trophy for Best Urban Transport Project by MoHUA, Government of India. Now being replicated by several States, this people-first mobility model has completed over 1.42 crore rides, benefiting over 1.3 lakh drivers and 45 lakh passengers. My heartiest congratulations to all those associated with this outstanding work. Once again, what Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow.

In Jalpaiguri, senior officials from District Headquarters, along with the SDOs and BDOs, are working tirelessly on the ground to provide immediate relief to those affected. Life jackets have already been distributed to ensure safety. Today, construction work on damaged bridges will also begin so that communication lines can be restored without delay. Every arm of the administration has been mobilised with a singular purpose: to stand beside the people in their hour of need. While nature’s fury has caused immense hardship, our collective resolve is to ensure that no family feels abandoned and no individual remains unsupported. I am personally monitoring the situation and will continue to ensure that every necessary measure is taken with compassion, speed, and accountability.

এটা খুবই দুর্ভাগ্যের এবং গভীর উদ্বেগের বিষয় যে, ভারতের প্রধানমন্ত্রী একটি প্রাকৃতিক বিপর্যয় নিয়ে রাজনীতি করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছেন, কোনো উপযুক্ত অনুসন্ধানের জন্য অপেক্ষা না করেই – তা-ও আবার যখন উত্তরবঙ্গের মানুষ ভয়াবহ বন্যা ও ধসের সঙ্গে যুঝছেন। যখন সমগ্র স্থানীয় প্রশাসন ও পুলিশ ত্রাণ ও উদ্ধারের কাজে ব্যস্ত হয়ে আছে, তখন বিজেপি নেতারা ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত এলাকায় গিয়েছিলেন বিপুল সংখ্যক গাড়ির কনভয় নিয়ে, কেন্দ্রীয় বাহিনীর নিরাপত্তা নিয়ে এবং স্থানীয় পুলিশ ও প্রশাসনকে কোনো খবর না দিয়ে। রাজ্য প্রশাসন, স্থানীয় পুলিশ বা তৃণমূল কংগ্রেসকে কীভাবে এই ঘটনার জন্য দায়ী করা যাবে? প্রধানমন্ত্রী তৃণমূল কংগ্রেস এবং পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের ওপর দোষারোপ করেছেন কিছুমাত্র প্রমাণ ছাড়া, আইনানুগ কোনো তদন্ত ছাড়া এবং কোনো প্রশাসনিক রিপোর্ট ছাড়া। এটা শুধু রাজনৈতিক নিম্নতা স্পর্শ করল না, যে সাংবিধানিক নৈতিকতা তুলে ধরতে প্রধানমন্ত্রী শপথ নিয়েছেন, সেই নৈতিকতারও লঙ্ঘন হল। যে কোনো গণতন্ত্রে আইন তার নিজস্ব পথ নেয় এবং কোনো ঘটনার দায় নির্ধারিত হয় যথাযথ প্রক্রিয়ায় - কোনো রাজনৈতিক বেদীর উচ্চতা থেকে করা একটি ট্যুইটের মাধ্যমে নয়। সংশ্লিষ্ট ঘটনা ঘটেছিল একটি কেন্দ্রে, যেখানে মানুষ নিজেরাই বিজেপির একজন বিধায়ককে নির্বাচন করেছেন। তথাপি এই ঘটনায় তৃণমূল কংগ্রেসের তথাকথিত ‘শক্তিমত্তা' দেখায় প্রধানমন্ত্রী দ্বিচারিতা অনুভব করলেন না। এই ধরনের অসার এবং অতি- সরলীকৃত সাধারণীকরণ শুধু অপরিণতই নয়, তা দেশের সর্বোচ্চ পদের সঙ্গে মানানসইও নয়। যে প্রধানমন্ত্রী মণিপুরে জাতি-হিংসা শুরু হবার ৯৬৪ দিন পরে সেখানে যাওয়ার অবকাশ পেয়েছিলেন, তাঁর কাছ থেকে বাংলার জন্য এই সহসা উদ্বেগ কোনো সমবেদনার পরিচয় নয়। বরঞ্চ, এটাকে সুবিধাবাদী রাজনৈতিক নাট্যের মতো মনে হচ্ছে। হ্যাঁ, আমরা সবাই দ্বিধাহীনভাবে হিংসার নিন্দা করি। কিন্তু এটা রাজনৈতিক বুক-চাপড়ানোর সময় নয়। এটা সহায়তা ও নিরাময়ের সময়। এটাও স্পষ্ট যে, বিজেপি সেই ক্লান্তিকর উত্তরবঙ্গ বনাম দক্ষিণবঙ্গের উপাখ্যানে ফিরতে চায়, ভোটের আগে মেরুকরণের আশায়। স্পষ্ট হয়ে যাক: বাংলা এক – আবেগে, সংস্কৃতিতে, রাজনীতিতে। প্রধানমন্ত্রীকে বলি: নির্বাচিত রাজ্য সরকারের কথা শুনুন, শুধু নিজের দলের লোকের কথা শুনবেন না। আপনি ভারতের প্রধানমন্ত্রী, কেবল বিজেপির নন। আপনার দায়িত্ব দেশ-নির্মাণ, কাহিনি নির্মাণ নয়। সঙ্কটের এই মুহূর্তে,আমরা যেন বিভাজন না বাড়াই। আমাদের একত্রিত হতে হবে, দলীয় লাইনের ঊর্ধ্বে মানুষের সেবায় – যে মানুষ এখন আমাদের সেবা সবচেয়ে বেশি চাইছে। রাজনীতি আরেকদিন হোক।

It is unfortunate and deeply concerning that the Prime Minister of India has chosen to politicise a natural disaster without waiting for a proper investigation, especially while people in North Bengal are grappling with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides. When the entire local administration and police is engrossed in relief and rescue operations, the BJP leaders chose to go to the affected areas with a large convoy of cars and under security cover of the central forces and that too without any information to local police and administration. How can the state administration , local police or the TMC be blamed for the incident ? The PM has blamed the TMC and the West Bengal Government outright without a shred of verified evidence, legal inquiry, or administrative report. This is not just a political low, it is a breach of the constitutional ethos the Prime Minister has sworn to uphold. In any democracy, the law must take its own course, and only due process can determine culpability - not a tweet from a political pulpit. The incident occurred in a constituency where the people themselves have elected a BJP MLA. Yet the Prime Minister sees no contradiction in painting the incident as a reflection of TMC’s so-called “strongmanship.” Such sweeping, unsubstantiated generalisations are not only immature, but also, they are unbecoming of the highest office in the land. Coming from a Prime Minister who visited Manipur only 964 days after it was engulfed in ethnic violence, the sudden concern for Bengal appears less like empathy and more like opportunistic political theatre. Yes, we all condemn violence, unequivocally. But this is not the time for partisan chest-thumping. This is a time to help and heal. It’s also evident that BJP is resorting to the tired North Bengal vs South Bengal narrative, hoping to polarise people ahead of elections. Let us be clear: Bengal is one - emotionally, culturally, and politically. I urge the Prime Minister: Listen to the elected state government, not just your party colleagues. You are the Prime Minister of India, not just of BJP. Your responsibility lies in nation-building, not narrative-building. At this critical hour, let us not deepen divides. Let us stand united beyond party lines, to serve the people who need us the most. Let’s leave politics for another day.

When the people of Bengal are in distress, I feel their suffering as my own. The recent heavy rainfall and landslides have caused severe flooding across North Bengal, leading to the tragic loss of lives, livelihoods, and property. Dhupguri, Nagrakata, large parts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar, as well as Matigara, Jorebunglow Sukhiapokhri, Mirik, and other areas of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, are among the worst affected. Today, I visited Hasimara and Nagrakata, meeting families and locals, assessing their needs, and assuring them of the full support and cooperation of the State Government. Our Chief Secretary and Director General of Police are on the front lines, personally monitoring the situation, while senior leaders, volunteers, and the State Disaster Management Force continue to carry out rescue and relief operations on a war footing. We have arranged buses to evacuate stranded tourists, opened community kitchens and relief camps to provide food and shelter, and announced compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs and a Home Guard position for the families of those who have lost their lives. Tea garden workers who have suffered losses will also receive compensation from the State Government in the coming days. I have repeatedly urged the Centre to constitute an Indo-Bhutan River Commission, but there has been no response. In addition, the lack of proper dredging and desiltation, and unilateral water releases from DVC-controlled dams have compounded the situation, resulting in avoidable tragedies. But in times of crisis, politics must never take precedence over people’s lives. The State Government remains committed to standing shoulder to shoulder with those affected. I urge everyone to maintain faith, remain calm, and not fall prey to provocations. Compassion, empathy, and humanity must guide us all.

I condemn the attack today on the Chief Justice of India Justice B R Gavai ji in the Supreme Court premises. This has been a most outrageous thing and effectively an assault on the Constitution of India. I personally respect Justice Gavai and send him my regards from the flood-hit North Bengal where I am camping now. Jai Hind!

আমার আন্তরিক আবেদন, এই দুর্যোগে বহু মানুষ মারাত্মক ক্ষতির মুখে পড়েছেন। তাঁদের কষ্ট আমরা গভীরভাবে অনুভব করছি। তবুও, এই কঠিন সময়েও আমাদের মনে রাখতে হবে , একতা ও ধৈর্যই আমাদের সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি। সবার কাছে অনুরোধ, সাহস হারাবেন না, সংযম ও সতর্কতা বজায় রাখুন। সরকার ও প্রশাসন সর্বাত্মকভাবে মানুষের পাশে আছে, এবং আমরা সবাই মিলে এই দুর্যোগ কাটিয়ে উঠব। দয়া করে শান্ত থাকুন, গুজবে কান দেবেন না, এবং চারপাশের মানুষকে সহযোগিতা করুন। এই সময় কোনো অপ্রীতিকর ঘটনা কাম্য নয় , আমরা একে অপরের পাশে থেকে, একসাথে এই সংকটের মোকাবিলা করব।

Today we are leaving for North Bengal. I will be staying there for two days to see rescue and restoration works there. My Chief Secretary is accompanying me, DG of Police has already gone there. Police and administration have been doing rescue and restoration operations in all affected areas. Community kitchens have been opened, distressed people are being given all-out support. Tourists are being safely evacuated and where hotel accommodation is to be arranged, that will be done at our cost. North Bengal State Transport Corporation and our other transport organisations are mobilizing streams of special Volvo and long-distance buses for evacuating the stranded tourists. While death cannot be compensated, we shall give Rs 5 lakh to the families of each deceased, and a Special Homeguard' s job to a kin in each such family as a special gesture. I shall visit some areas in North Bengal today and tomorrow, and our administration will reach out all humanitarian help to all those affected by the flood in each place. If the Central Government did its job of dredging of the Ganga-Hugli river at several critical points, and if DVC did its desiltation works which it is not wilfully doing, if their dams and barrages were not so used in this manner against us, and if central government money was spent for the necessary public works in Bengal rather than squandering funds away in other unrelated pursuits, our people would have been spared of the man- made flood that we are facing in large tracts of North and South Bengal in this season. Our own Irrigation works and check dams etc have been useful in arresting the damages in many areas. We are there, always, every moment. Sharing some photos showing our police, fire brigade and disaster management officers and men in rescue operations at this moment.

Many many thanks and my highest salute to the police and the administration in the State, the entire police parivar and the entire administration parivar, the media, the common people, the cultural fraternity, and all the puja clubs and organisers for their excellent works, superb capabilities and performances. Bengal has shown its highest standards of cultural heritage, from Kolkata to every district to every block of the State. My highest regards and heartfelt salute and love to all.

আকস্মিক দুর্যোগের আক্রমণে বিপর্যস্ত কলকাতা শহরের ও লাগোয়া কিছু এলাকার পরিস্থিতি স্বাভাবিক করার জন্য আমাদের সহকর্মীরা ও আধিকারিকরা সর্বত্র চেষ্টা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছেন। ডিভিসি-র একতরফা জল ছাড়ায় রাজ্য এমনিতেই প্লাবিত ছিল, নদী, খাল সব টইটম্বুর ছিল। ফারাক্কা ব্যারেজ দিয়ে আসছে বিহার, উত্তরপ্রদেশের প্রচুর জল, সেখানে ড্রেজিং না হওয়ায় সমস্যা তো ছিলই । তার ওপরে এল এই হঠাৎ বিপুল বৃষ্টি। আমি মেয়র, মুখ্যসচিব প্রমুখের মাধ্যমে পরিস্থিতির ওপর নজর রেখেছি, প্রয়োজনীয় নির্দেশ দিচ্ছি। আমি বলেছি, আজ থেকে সরকারী সব স্কুল ছুটি থাকবে। কলেজ, বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়েও আগামী দু-দিন ছুটি। বেসরকারী অফিস গুলি আগামী দু'দিন ওয়ার্ক ফ্রম হোম করুন। সরকারী অফিস-ও দুদিন ওয়ার্ক ফ্রম হোম করবে। মানুষকে বাঁচানোই এখন প্রাথমিক কাজ। আজ CESC-র অবহেলায় কলকাতায় বিদ্যুৎস্পৃষ্ট হয়ে যাঁরা মারা গেলেন, তাঁদের পরিবারের জন্য আমাদের আন্তরিক সমবেদনা। মৃত্যুর কোনো ক্ষতিপূরণ হয়না, জীবনের কোন বিকল্প হয় না। তবুও আমরা প্রতি পরিবারের একজনের চাকরি নিশ্চিত করব। ক্ষতিপূরণ দিতে বলছি CESC কে-ও। আমি CESC-র সঙ্গে কথা বলেছি। আমাদের আন্তরিক সমবেদনার পাশাপাশি এই ক্ষতিপূরণ-ও পরিবারগুলির প্রাপ্য। আমরা পাশে আছি, সব সময়, প্রতিটি মুহূর্তে। নবান্নে কন্ট্রোল রুম খুলেছি, আমি দেখছি। কন্ট্রোল রুম সারাক্ষণ খোলা আছে। ফোন নম্বর- 91-33-22143526/ 91-33-22535185. এ ছাড়াও টোল ফ্রি নম্বর- 91-8697981070 আজ আর কলকাতায় পুজো উদ্বোধনে কোথাও যাচ্ছি না। জেলার পুজোগুলি ভার্চুয়ালি উদ্বোধন করে দেব। কয়েকটা দিন এখন খুব সতর্ক থাকতে হবে সবাইকে ।

আমাদের পুরুলিয়ার মেয়ে অনুপর্ণা রায়-এর অসাধারণ আন্তর্জাতিক পুরস্কার পাওয়ার খবরে আমার খুব আনন্দ হয়েছে। আমি তাঁকে, তাঁর মা-বাবাকে, তাঁর সকল বন্ধু-সহযোগীকে অভিনন্দন জানাই। অনুপর্ণা বিশ্বখ্যাত ভেনিস ফিল্ম ফেস্টিভ্যালে তাঁর শাখায় শ্রেষ্ঠ পরিচালকের সম্মান পেয়েছেন, চলচ্চিত্রের জগতে যেটাকে কার্যত পৃথিবী জয় বলা যায়।এই শাখায় এই সম্মান তাঁর আগে কোনো ভারতীয় পরিচালক পান নি। তাঁর মা-বাবা কুলটিতে থাকেন, তাঁদের শিকড় আছে জঙ্গলমহলে, রাঙামাটিতে। আমি মনে করি, তাঁর মুকুটপ্রাপ্তি আমাদের বাংলার মেয়েদের জয়। আমি প্রার্থনা করব, অনুপর্ণা অনেক এগিয়ে যান, আমাদের মুখ আরো উজ্জ্বল করুন।

On this Police Day, we honour the heroes in uniform who stand strong to uphold law and order. Your courage, sacrifice and dedication ensure our safety and peace everyday.

Allow me to be a little nostalgic today. As the Railways Minister of India, I was fortunate in planning and sanctioning series of Metro Railway corridors in metropolitan Kolkata. I had drawn the blueprints, arranged the funds, initiated the works and ensured that the different ends of the city ( Joka, Garia, Airport, Sector V, etc) were connected by an intra- city Metro grid. Later, as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, I had the additional privilege of taking part in execution of the projects. From the State, I arranged free land, paved roads, arranged rehabilitation of displaced people, removed impediments, and ensured all help in the execution of projects. Our chief secretaries successively held series of coordination meeting to ensure integration of execution agencies. My planning as Railways Minister got fulfilment in my participation in execution. Expanding Metro infrastructure has been a long journey for me. Allow me some nostalgia today.
