EXCLUSIVE: A small but significant number of Labour MPs – just under a dozen in total – have held private discussions with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch about the possibility of mounting a no-confidence vote against Keir Starmer. According to well-placed sources, five Labour MPs approached Mrs Badenoch on Thursday afternoon, hours after she used a speech to openly urge disaffected members of the governing party to force the issue. A further six followed on Friday. One source close to the Conservative leader described the exchanges as "very direct". They said the initial group of Labour MPs contacted her team within roughly two hours of her intervention last Thursday, making clear their deep frustration with the Prime Minister’s leadership. None of the MPs involved has so far been willing to express their concerns publicly or formally through party channels. All are understood to be wary of swift retaliation from the Labour leadership and whips’ office. However, I’m told the recent departure of senior strategist Morgan McSweeney has noticeably shifted the mood. Several of those who have spoken to Mrs Badenoch now feel greater freedom – and greater urgency – to consider more decisive action against the Prime Minister.
