As report by Standard, a ship identified as MV Agia Valentina docked at the Port of Mombasa carrying 27,000 tonnes of contaminated sugar valued at KSh 1.5 billion. Reports claim the sugar was initially meant for destruction in South Africa, but was later acquired by a local company for industrial use in chemical production. However, it has emerged that the consignment is now being repackaged for public consumption at Kibos sugar company. Y’all know who owns Kibos, the guy who's flying with yellow yellow damsels from Seychelles. At the same time, sugarcane farmers in Western Kenya continue to face major challenges, with many struggling to find reliable millers for their cane. Even factories that were previously dependable like Kabras & West Kenya are reportedly operating below capacity, leaving many farmers frustrated and financially strained. Farmers have now come to realization that the govt's push for privatization in the sugar sector had nothing to do with addressing the long-standing problems affecting local farmers. Farmers now fear Ruto could open more room for imported sugar to dominate the market, further weakening local sugarcane farming and threatening the livelihoods of thousands of farmers who depend on the industry.
