Do Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas threaten Israel’s existence? In his interview on @NPR, Gregg Carlstrom (@glcarlstrom) of @TheEconomist allows @toddzwillich to assert: “Israel sees Iran and its proxies like Hezbollah and Hamas as existential threats. I think there’s plenty of evidence that they are existential threats.” Carlstrom does not challenge this claim. While it is true that all three have expressed a desire to eliminate Israel, none of them has demonstrated the capacity to do so. Israel does not face an existential threat from any of these actors. Iran attacked Israel in response to the Twelve-Day War in June and in response to Israel’s and America’s recent effort to overthrow the Islamic Republic. A number of Iranian missiles penetrated Israeli defenses, but Iran never posed a credible threat to Israel’s existence. Hezbollah has likewise proven incapable of threatening Israel’s survival. Despite Israel’s invasion of Lebanon and the destruction of dozens of Lebanese villages, Hezbollah has managed to kill only a limited number of Israeli soldiers, even while Israeli troops have operated on Lebanese territory. Hamas successfully breached the border barrier on October 7 and killed roughly 1,300 Israelis, but the attack, while deeply traumatic, was not an existential threat to Israel. The distinction matters. Carlstrom should have challenged Zwillich’s characterization more directly. Israel’s wars, according to this interpretation, have been wars of choice rather than wars of national survival. This distinction also bears on the next question raised in the interview: “Is Israel safer now?” Carlstrom gives a qualified yes-and-no answer. Clearly, Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas have all been significantly weakened, as he notes. But since October 2023, Israel has also occupied roughly 1,000 square kilometers of additional territory across Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria — territory amounting to roughly 5 percent of Israel’s pre-1949 area. Critics argue that this occupation is likely to fuel further war, resentment, and instability throughout the region. It also increases the likelihood of deeper American involvement in conflicts with Lebanon, Syria, and the Palestinians. Syria’s new leadership had appeared willing to pursue accommodation with Israel. Now, however, Syria risks becoming locked into renewed confrontation. The United States, too, may find itself increasingly drawn into these conflicts as Israel’s principal ally. In the short term, Israel may appear safer because its adversaries have been weakened. But over the long term, continued occupation and regional conflict may produce greater instability, more war, and less security for everyone involved. It will certainly be bad for the United States and the region. the1a.org/segments/donal…

Today at Trump National Doral Miami, we witnessed an unforgettable moment with the dedication of the 22-foot statue honoring President Donald J. Trump. Let me be clear: this is not a golden calf. We worship the Lord Jesus Christ and Him alone. This statue is a celebration of life. It is a symbol of resilience, freedom, patriotism, strength, and the will power to keep fighting for the future of America. It also stands as a reminder of the hand of God and His protection over President Trump’s life. Time and time again, when his life was threatened, God’s mercy prevailed. Today was not just a ribbon cutting. It was the public display of a powerful movement that has spread across America and around the world. I was deeply honored to serve as President Trump’s main point of contact throughout this process, and I do not take that assignment lightly. I want to personally thank Ash, Dustin Stockton, Brock Pierce, Hershey Friedman, Yaakov Filitchkin, Sam, Jack, and the 6,000+ Patriots who donated, believed, sacrificed, and made this historic moment possible. Thank you to the entire Trump Doral team for your incredible hospitality and excellence. And thank you, President Donald J. Trump, for calling me today and speaking to the crowd. We are forever grateful. God bless President Trump. God bless every Patriot. And God bless the United States of America. 🇺🇸 #PresidentTrump #SpiritualDiplomats #TrumpDoral #TrumpStatueDedication #AmericaFirst #PatriotMovement #FaithFreedomPatriotism
