I feel like we’re not talking enough about the fact that the Alabama Supreme Court quoted the Bible and cited the “wrath of God” as their legal reasoning for why frozen embryos are in fact “children.”

@Dr_EEbel @PetrovADmitri Not really preventing mutation, but we think the effects we'll observe won't be driven by new mutations. We track frequencies of pooled barcoded strains with low initial freq and large pop size (~ 10^9) with several reps. Likely new mutations will show up as rep to rep variation

We're running some fun experiments and are curious what your expectations are: How many generations in the past do you think yeast "remember" environmental change?

Now, we're running an experiment to see how long this memory lasts - cast your vote and we will update you when we have the data!

Meat is killing the planet. Not only is this fact unanimously understood by scientists working on climate and environment, but it is supported by hundreds and hundreds of studies (one came out today in fact!) Here, I break down a small handful of the most important ones. 👇🏼🧵

This is not a milestone for animal welfare. EU leaders, led by @SKyriakidesEU and @MarosSefcovic, promised to overhaul the bloc's farm animal welfare rules. Their scientific panel agreed. So did >80% of Europeans. Then industry lobbied them ... and we're left with this.
Stella Kyriakides@SKyriakidesEU

Today is a milestone for 🇪🇺 animal welfare. To improve transport conditions for the 1.6 billion animals moved in and from🇪🇺each year⬇️ 🔹Shorter travel times 🔹Minimum space for transported animals 🔹Strict conditions on transport temperatures 🔹Stronger rules on animal exports

U.S. meat consumption is going up -- that fact is indisputable. But while you might imagine that all Americans are consistently eating more meat every year, the truth behind this simple graph is much more complicated. Here are ten charts that explain how we eat meat.🧵

I disagree with this decision. Mike’s tweet was in poor taste and was terribly hurtful to many people. It was not hate speech, however, and is within the bounds on normal discourse. Elife’s decision is inappropriate, will chill speech, and is part of the cancel culture I abhor.

I have been informed that I am being replaced as the Editor in Chief of @eLife for retweeting a @TheOnion piece that calls out indifference to the lives of Palestinian civilians.

With @_hgellert, Sam Church, @AntonySuvorov, @PetrovADmitri and others, we use low-input (down to 30ng), single-insect @nanopore sequencing to help do 184 new genomes and address the near absence of genomic data for drosophilid species that cannot be cultured in the lab.

Very happy and proud about this project, where we are and where we are headed. Truly amazing work by @Bernard_Y_Kim and everyone involved. Huge kudos to all! 1/n

We also find that mutants with higher variance in single environments change their behavior more in fluctuating environments, and that fitness gained over the corresponding static environment in one component of a fluctuating environment is often lost in the other component. 3/4

Very excited to share our work led by @clabreu & with @PetrovADmitri on the dramatic effects of environmental fluctuations on fitness! We find that yeast have “memory” of their previous environment, often deviating sharply from behavior expected from a static environment 1/4

Flying back from grc.org/molecular-mech… - incredibly grateful and reenergized. One of the best conferences in terms of science, intellectual engagement, and conversation I ever attended. Thank you to all but especially to @ten_olivier and @judithberman11 for organizing!

📣 📣 📣 The shock of my day: Over the last few days, I measured power consumption of our -80°C freezers @CECAD_ . ~13 kWh per day each 🤔So, one freezer consumes much more electricity per year than my family and me🙁
