Something deep and meaningful but with a little humorous quirky bit, so you know I'm self-aware. Personal views here.

Dunno why the country has to put up with the Starmer agenda hacking away at our rights for however many more months til they can try again (and probably be blocked again) to get Burnham in. Sure, Burnham would be good, but they fucked it. If they really believe no one else of their hundreds of MPs could do it then that tells us all we need to know anyway.
Tony Diver@Tony_Diver

Understand that allies of Andy Burnham are desperately trying to convince Catherine West to abandon her leadership bid less than an hour after she launched it. Lou Haigh is working with colleagues to find a way to get her to drop it. Burnham cannot run.

@SpockResists Really reached for that goofy post. All of it is complete trash. NATO burned their own bridge the past 6 weeks and it was seen in-real time and it was on full display. Trump always exposes the bad actors. Masterclass.

Can we just get one thing clear. The reason America lost its allies. Was because Trump actively destroyed every single relationship the US built since WW2 They didn’t suddenly turn their backs on US. They said fuck off to an abusive partner.

@emptywheel This Schlicter character accidentally makes a good point. Europeans don't just blame Trump for his demented, adversarial behaviour. They blame the whole US for electing him. When he goes, trust will not magically reappear overnight.

Just had to walk over to the TV when I heard Trump had "made a quick, impressive start". It was Judd Trump, in the snooker. BAU for the other guy I would guess.

@phl43 Bullies fail when confronted by someone who's not afraid of them. I suspect religious fanatics (which is how we're framing Iran's leaders) are not afraid of anyone on earth.

I'm pretty sure they got the message after Trump murdered their entire leadership. The truth is that you actually want Trump to go full retard and send Iran back to the Stone Age, because although it would like result in a global economic meltdown as Iran retaliates by lashing out at energy infrastructure everywhere in the Gulf and immiserate hundreds of millions, you don't care about what happens to anyone in the rest of the world as long as Israel is safe and you can only imagine Israel being safe if every country around it has been turned either into a lackey or a wasteland.
Mark Dubowitz@mdubowitz

The regime still hasn’t internalized that President Trump will out-escalate them if he thinks escalation is required to force de-escalation. He is not a conventional Western politician, and Tehran repeatedly miscalculates because it keeps assuming he is.

An impressive result for @reformparty_uk today. We more than doubled our vote and beat Labour in their own backyard. Huge credit to @GoodwinMJ and the thousands of volunteers. The wider campaign, however, should be a wake up call. South Asian men instructing women how to vote at polling stations in modern Britain. The winning party campaigning under a foreign flag and in foreign languages to exploit a foreign conflict. Depresssingly I can only see this appalling level of sectarianism spreading because most of our political class are in denial. Britain is broken. But it can be set on a better course. That’s why everyone who shares these concerns needs to get behind Reform and ensure the fight back can begin.

Reform has today reported the many cases of ‘family voting’ to the Electoral Commission and Greater Manchester Police. What was witnessed yesterday is deeply concerning and raises serious questions about the integrity of the democratic process in predominantly Muslim areas. If this is what was happening at polling stations, just imagine the potential for coercion with postal votes. If action isn’t taken now, then we will ensure it is after the next General Election.

@thetripathi58 This entire thread is madness and seems to hinge upon the recruiter holding the budget and having the power to negotiate, whereas in reality they are a facilitator. 0/10.

The recruiter asks: "What are your salary expectations?" You give a number. Silence. The interview ends. Two days later, the offer is $15k less than you’re worth. You just fell into the "Anchor Trap." Stop costing yourself thousands. Say this instead:

Green Party policy is decided by members. The Green Party’s official policy is to reform NATO but Zack Polanski is also sharing his personal views which is leaving NATO when we’ve set up alternative alliances.
Torsten Bell@TorstenBell

This is very telling. There is almost no scrutiny of Green policy positions. As soon as there is, even with this very gentle probing, you get a mess - roaming from “reform NATO from within” to “abolish it” in a few seconds

Putin was in danger of failing in his Ukraine war. Now the US peace plan gives him everything he wants — even the parts of the Donbas his troops were incapable of winning. Ukraine, the injured party in this war, gets absolutely zero.

@ZoeJardiniere Why not apply this principle across the board? Healthcare, security, education - all would benefit from a bottom-up, problem solving approach. However, it doesn't keep certain people in power, so... not popular.

Imagine if that was the debate? How can we change the immigration system to get better outcomes for families, better economic outcomes, more cohesive communities? Instead of always ALWAYS starting from “how can we get rid of them?”
Zoe Gardner@ZoeJardiniere

@paul_astell Yeah, & Mahmood’s “if we don’t talk about this the far right win” but like we NEVER get space to talk about not-evil solutions. We’re always debating Labour cruelty or reform cruelty. Tell me when we heard a debate about changes to protect people & integrate them well? #r4today

Here's the absolute crux of the matter, why I bought it up in the first place, and why it's a problem (and why I mentioned that subtlety and nuance are largely lost on people): Everyone up in arms about the 50-year mortgage is fundamentally upset because of the follow-on and trickle-down effects of introducing such a mortgage. What most fail to understand is that this complaint equates to, "We must prevent bad people from taking advantage of the stupid and lazy!", as it is exactly those people who will accept such ridiculous mortgage terms. However, bad people will ALWAYS take advantage of the stupid and lazy. They always have. It will continue. You should be railing against the stupid and lazy people themselves. The ones who will accept it hook, line, and sinker. "But we can't do anything about stupid and/or lazy people!" MBIC, you can do more about stupid and lazy people than you can about bad people rigging a system to take advantage of them. Ridicule them. Mock them. Ostracize them. Bully them. Use their desire for inclusion, their want to belong, their need for social acceptance against them. We've too long languished under the artificial yoke of a superimposed liberal mindset that "bullying is bad". The fuck it is! Bullying is what maintains societal cohesion, community norms, and standards! Your unwillingness to confront people and call them out on their idiocy is what allows it to perpetuate.

Perhaps @BBCPanorama should issue a formal apology and rerun their piece with an edit of that footage which shows the events of Jan 6 more clearly. Surely this would correct the record and even attract an increased viewership who can then judge Trump's behaviour for themselves.
