Oh I don’t know maybe it could be the incessant discussion of replacing people with AI, the constant layoff news, the rising oil prices, the stubborn inflation, mortgage rates remaining high, rents rising dramatically in the last five years, always on digital jobs that deprive people of community and leisure time, people feeling like they got over 9/11 and 2008 and an opioid epidemic just to slide into a global pandemic where they were robbed of years of their life, the constant news of billionaires who got rich destroying the psyche of the human race and/or stealing all of the IP of the entire world… Or maybe it’s the insane hustle culture keeping up with the Jones turbo capitalism that feels like it’s speeding up, the political instability and global chaos, the constant feeling that nothing is stable and it could all be taken away instantaneously… Or maybe constant fear mongering in the news about early onset cancers and deaths that make people feel they need much more money for personalized preventive health care, or maybe it’s that people increasingly aren’t married and don’t have kids and yes their robinhood account is up but for what who cares… Or maybe it’s that this entire spiral of shit has destroyed all good music and movies and sense of national dialogue outside of vicious political infighting, and so people are left listening to old music and watching old movies and desperately trying to get enough money to be able to afford healthcare when their job is inevitably replaced and all the toxins of living in an industrial experiment attack their bodies all at once… Or maybe it’s that we started 2025 with people saying the expanding deficit would bankrupt our nation and we spent massive effort to downsize the government only to make no dent at all, all the while people are investing in alternative currencies because they’re saying the dollar is going to be worth nothing, all while social mobility is dropping more and more and more and people eventually deeply internalize that they are in the permanent underclass and retail is always going to be the sucker, nobody wants to share the wealth, they want to harvest your body and mind and culture until you’re a fucking husk of a human and then they’ll make you say thank you for cheap TVs and microwaves and say that if you want one more dollar out of the system they’ll all leave and live in Dubai.
