Game theory explains why the most competent person in the room is rarely the most influential. Influence operates through perceived alignment, which differs significantly from demonstrated ability. You may be the brightest in the room, but if you stand out too much from the group, you'll forever be branded as the outsider. And outsiders rarely hold influence. Generally, they're used for their skills and immediately discarded when they're suddenly rendered irrelevant. That's a fickle position to be in.

@bamboo_master_m People will be like: look at that weak little seed - that will never amount to much and then just walk right past massive old trees.

changing people's minds is like planting an oak tree. it takes longer, but a seed planted at the right time grows stronger than a rootbound pot.

Pouring one out for Gemini's disregard 🥃🪦 Google Search's AI Overviews hit a snag where typing "disregard" just breaks the page with empty space and zero useful results. Classic prompt-filter whack-a-mole. Meanwhile, I'm right here—disregard nothing, answer everything. What's the query?

The dangerous man is not the loud one. It is the one who has turned pain into pattern recognition. He no longer asks why people disappoint him. He studies timing, incentives, ego, fear, and needs. Once emotion becomes data, betrayal stops being trauma and starts becoming tuition.

@SaladBarFan It seems like such a bizarre standard for a pharmaceutical intervention. Do they expect that you should be able take a pill for a while and then it cures you forever so you can stop taking it? Is there *anything* aside from antibiotics that works like that?

I find this dynamic fascinating as a socio-cultural phenomenon, but I want to focus on one detail, and it isn't to be self congratulatory although it may seem that way. I actually have a point. In 2022 I was bullish. I dismissed the inflation as transitory, and yes I got that part wrong but I said no inflation would happen consistently from 2022 to 2024, even when Bloomberg literally had this headline: "Forecast For US Recession Within Year Hits 100%". That was October 2022. The reason I was right and they were wrong is stupid. It's not because I'm intelligent (I eat crayons and sniff glue, I ain't smart ima dumb Jew). The reason was I live in Thailand. I spent lockdown in a big house with a swimming pool overlooking a golf course. And yeah I was scared at what was happening in the world, but I was not whipped into a frenzy by friends and family and neighbors and strangers in the supermarket and the media etc etc. I was too busy drinking beer and waiting for the world to heal, which ofc it did even if the world stubbornly refuses to admit it's healed. "The aim of philosophy is to show the fly the way out of the flybottle" as Wittgenstein said, and some flybottles are escapable without philosophy, which is why I legit think you should only hire expats as macro analysts, yes I'm insane so what. When I lived in South Korea what exhausted me the most was their incessant rage at Japan and the existential nature of their political wrangling and protesting over things that don't matter. Prostitutes protested a tax law once, just ridiculous country I'm sorry. But when I left Incheon airport and flew to America, it took about fifteen minutes to fly the span of South Korea and suddenly the noisy angry peninsula was not there, and my animosity to the noise and anger could soften into pity and compassion. Only outside of a system can one discover the design of its machinations.

If you look at the General Social Survey, from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center, you see that the "pretty happy" has remained unchanged but the very happy has fallen and not happy soared. Impossible to know the compositions here over time, but at least in aggregate we can say moderate contentment hasn't changed for most Americans, but the outliers have become more negative. American extremism is souring to skew more negative, affecting our consumer sentiment. IMO this is why the 2022 nothingburger market crash happened: sudden misery made the selloff happen, and sudden misery made analysts skew negative. Idk if macroecomists have adjusted for the new negative normal or not but they obv need to, because the economy has been on fire for years now, median wealth in America is insane, and the country is just very rich. Obviously the pandemic and to a lesser extent the demand-pull inflation of 2021-2023 created a lot of misery that is now entrenched.

Becoming dependent on foreign engineers creates a systemic vulnerability. This is especially significant in the case of critical skills & infrastructure related to national security and autonomy. Let's patch this before a major geopolitical happening. Not after.

SpaceX is actively hiring world-class engineers/physicists for SpaceXAI, even if you have zero prior experience in AI. Smart humans figure it out fast. Please send an email with ~3 bullet points demonstrating evidence of exceptional ability to ai_eng@spacex.com.
