What's the best model for building AI agents? Hard to tell without careful experimentation, and it will also depend on the domain and requirements. I often check this Agent Leaderboard built by @nlpguy_ and the @rungalileo team. Observations: - A few new models have been added to the leaderboard recently like GPT-4.1, o4-mini, and o3. - Claude 3.7 Sonnet is the top model, closely followed by Gemini 2.5 Pro. Not surprising to me, and it aligns with my own observations building complex agentic systems. - The team reports that OpenAI's new models, like 4.1, are behind, and their reasoning models, o3 and o4-mini, are not great at simultaneous multiple tool calling (important for efficiency). However, this is the case with many of these reasoning models. That could change soon. - GPT-4.1 mini is the most cost-effective of all OpenAI models and replaces the costly GPT-4o, but is still worse than Gemini and Mistral. - The leaderboard assesses different scenarios like error handling, multi-turn interactions, and tool selection quality, among other things. If you are developing agentic systems, it's not just the response quality that matters, it is often the trajectories, tool selection, and intermediate outputs where the issues are.
