@Chitailova My brother has lived in beautiful Haarlem for nigh on 30 years now with his Dutch partner, he loves it and is appalled at the state of the UK when he visits. He's a very patriotic Brit who would never live here again 🤔🙃

A few thoughts on the Netherlands 🇳🇱   After several years living here, I want to say it clearly: I really like this country.   The Dutch have a special kind of quiet decency — direct, practical, and often kinder than they give themselves credit for. I appreciate the freedom, the safety, the respect for personal space, and the way life feels organized without being oppressive.   This environment has also given me space to breathe and continue my journey with mental health — to manage my psychoses better and build a meaningful life.   I love the beautiful light on the canals, the bike culture (even if I still complain about the rain), and the simple pleasure of Friday mornings at the market. Most of all, I’m grateful for the good people I’ve met — normal, warm, down-to-earth people who value real life.   It’s not perfect, of course. No country is. But this place has given me space to grow, to heal in my own way, and to create. And for that, I’m truly thankful.

I’ve been in 🇳🇱 6 years & a frequent visitor for 17 before that. I agree with Ekaterina & add: • great schools • great sports facilities, all well organised • great healthcare (unfortunately, I’m an expert) • in general, things work • cities set up for cycling • great cultural heritage • multi-lingual population • prosperity • a healthy democracy & the rule of law • affordable & good quality public transport • easy access to neighbouring countries I can think of only 2 things I miss about the UK - better gardens & parks & more varied & beautiful landscape.

In 1941, after the battle of Crete, a little girl threw a parcel of food to starving Allied prisoners in the Agii Apostolis POW camp. A German guard saw her and beat her with his rifle. The POWs booed and shouted at him, allowing the girl to escape. Today I met her. Her name is Anna and she is 97. #Greece #Crete #History #WW2

@JohnsNikki48371 @Uvalajnr In fairness, it wasn't the girl who said anything to him about smoking, it was a friend. Plus HE chose to quit for her, nobody forced him.

Back in 1990, I went out on a Thursday night with some friends and ended up meeting a girl through a mutual friend. We spent most of the night talking in a smoky pub and instantly clicked. At the end of the night, we said goodbye and casually agreed we should probably see each other again sometime. The next day at lunch, I was out with a few people from the same group. After eating, I lit a cigarette like usual. That’s when the friend who introduced us casually said: “You know that girl you were talking to last night? She really doesn’t like smoking.” I sat there for a second thinking about it. Then I stubbed out the cigarette, crushed the rest of the pack, threw away my lighter… and never smoked again. That was 35 years ago. This May, we celebrated 32 years of marriage.

@realcrazyvaclav @peterwi41049021 @Dplanet Exactly. Let's be real, even if those were Musk's own achievements, they aren't the most amazingly necessary, vital creations in history, without which the world would be a worse place 😉

🚨🇿🇦 The richest man on earth. Born in South Africa. His name is on nothing there. Not one hospital. Not one trust. Not one shelter. Not one library. Not one scholarship. Not one clinic. Not one housing project. He could fund any of it. He has chosen none of it. Instead he sells the world a story of white victimhood, while millions of black South Africans still live in the conditions built for them by white supremacy.

@carmarian @JournalismSEEN @DailyMail These comments were from 2022. States that clearly in the article but being framed by many as very recent. So this was before the clarity of the SC. Still, it doesn't negate he actually held these views then. No idea what they are today 🤷‍♀️

@LeaderofKCC Well I'm sure all the parents struggling to hold down a full time job who are just making ends meet and find these clubs a lifeline will thank you for that. Do you suggest they get a nanny or give up work?

@WendyEMorton @DrDublin1 @SaulStaniforth They should live on whatever the either take to work with them for their lunch/buy from the local sandwich shop/go to the local cafe to eat. What shouldn't be happening is us subsidising those menu prices & chef/staff involved in creating it. Do you get a subsidised lunch?

@fleetstreetfox I've just recovered from a chest infection followed by a full-blown cold. I find Sinutab much better than Sudafed. Having said that, I now realise that buying regular paracetamol and using a few Phenylephrine Hydrochloride capsules is the same thing, but cheaper.

Sorry on what bloody planet are people just allowed to put stuff up in public spaces with no consequence? Shall I go and dump a sink in our local park or hang some pics of random animals on lampposts? What if everyone does this? These people are insane.

This. I'd never thought about the gaps before all this. Now I know they are both essential for safety, and a vulnerability to voyeurs. Making all cubicles fully-enclosed is not the answer. Just keep men out of the women's.
Under&Over@KeepToiletsSafe

@LoudBonnet Burnham should reconsider for health and safety reasons. HSE say only toilet cubicles within a single sex environment are regulated to have door gaps. Gaps needed for cleaning, ventilation, supervision for emergencies and prevention of misuse. They save lives and prevent assaults
