In Austin, TX we have several COVID-19 patients on ECMO (complete heart & lung bypass), the last attempt at survival from COVID. The youngest is 19 yrs old The oldest is only 39. These were all preventable. This is not the same virus it used to be. Get the vaccine. 🙏🏼😔

[5/5] To my colleagues out in Oklahoma, I send you all my love and compassion through this difficult time. Losing a colleague is devastating. We can only hope for better gun regulations to keep us safe as we continue to work tirelessly to protect our patients.

[4/5] Gun control is about so much more than “freedom” — it’s about protecting our children, our doctors, our patients, and every other person who could just as easily be at risk. It’s way past time for better gun regulation. Enough is enough.

[1/5] Today two surgeons and a receptionist in Tulsa, OK were murdered by a patient who purchased an AR-15 weapon hours before. A frustrated and emotional patient was able to do this in hours, without any time to cool down…

Email from one of my fourth grader’s teachers: “Thank you for sharing your children with me today. Especially today as I know how hard it must be for you all to send them out of the front door sometimes.” Teachers. We don’t deserve them 😭

I will never forget a single face of the countless children I have treated in the ER as victims of gun violence. There is no.greater.tragedy. 💔 How many more must die? How many more lives must be lost for us to take bipartisan action on gun control? Enough is enough.

As a new mother, I understand that my pregnancy, delivery, and living newborn baby are a *privilege*. 🙏🏼 Not all pregnancies are safe. Not all women have access to medical care. Not all women have the privilege of a safe, planned, healthy pregnancy. Those women deserve a choice.

As an ER doctor I see the fatal consequences pregnancies first-hand. Ectopic pregnancies, for example, implant outside the uterus, and can rupture and cause internal hemorrhage if not aborted. These pregnancies can *never* yield a live baby. The only outcome = maternal suffering.

The narrative that abortions are always elective & for those who “made mistakes” has to go. Abortions are often to save lives & prevent suffering. There is an entire medical specialty (Maternal Fetal Medicine) for high risk pregnancies, some of which can turn fatal unless aborted.

I worked in 3 countries across Africa (east & west) and our most successful global health initiatives targeted 1) system development (improving access to care) and 2) education (improving trust in western medicine). Donations are only as effective as the system to deliver them.

To simplify our global vaccine inequity to “the west isn’t donating enough” is a narrow lens that misses the point. In 5/8 countries in Southern Africa, shipments have been halted due to a vaccine surplus. The deeper issue is distribution, infrastructure, and vaccine hesitancy.

In case anyone was still wondering, the COVID vaccine does not cause infertility 😘. #23weeks! “Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart.” - Winnie the Pooh 🎈

There are few things more heart-breaking than witnessing a mother having a stillborn due to COVID, or a newborn being born into a world with no mother due to COVID. Only 25% of pregnant US women are vaccinated. Protect your child with *everything* you can, get the vaccine.

To all of the specialists who have gone out of their way to help us care for our patients from the ER, arrange outpatient alternatives to admission, and come in at all hours to help care for patients from the ER who can’t get admitted… thank you… 🙏🏼 desperate times.

Banning abortions isn’t the answer. Making birth control free, and investing in early sex education is. The former affects the poor. The latter benefits everyone. If we care about life, we have to protect it AFTER birth with better social services. Or the cycle continues.
