You dig a trench, fill it with rotting logs and branches, cover with compost and soil, and plant on top. The wood acts as a sponge: it absorbs water from rain and irrigation and releases it slowly to plant roots through summer heat, when water is scarce and the wood is actively decomposing. What happens below the surface: Rotting wood can hold up to twice its own weight in water. In summer, when soil moisture is most critical for vegetable roots, the buried wood releases that stored water slowly upward through capillary action. As it decomposes further, it feeds the fungal networks and beneficial bacteria that improve long-term soil structure — a process that continues for several years after burial. The channels the wood leaves behind as it breaks down also improve drainage in wet periods, preventing waterlogging that rots roots during heavy rain. How to build one: 1. Dig a trench 18 to 24 inches deep across the bed 2. Fill it with logs, thick branches, and any old rotting wood you have — the more decomposed already, the faster it activates 3. Layer smaller branches and twigs over the logs to fill the gaps 4. Cover with several inches of compost 5. Top with your existing or new topsoil and plant normally The soil surface may settle slightly in the first season as the wood compresses — that's normal. Water more frequently during the first year until the wood has fully saturated. From the second year onward, watering frequency can decrease noticeably as the buried wood handles moisture retention. 🌿 Best candidates to plant on top: tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and any other heavy-feeding, moisture-loving crop. Root vegetables like carrots work better once the wood has had a full season to settle.
