I have a vague memory of a TV show in the late 1980s or early 1990s on BBC1 (I think) at 6 or 7pm. Families went on their and were rated on their health, 25pts for from memory food, smoking, drinking, exercise. Then they came back to see if it improved. Friends don't let other friends apply to jobs on the Internet, especially Linkedin. The internet job application system has become a dystopian mess—automated filters, endless ghosting, and the illusion of opportunity wrapped in a UX designed to make you feel like progress is happening. In reality, it's often a black hole that saps confidence and energy. AI exacerbates this by making applications easier to mass-produce, leading to hiring managers getting flooded with low-effort submissions, which in turn makes them filter more aggressively (often arbitrarily). The result? More automation, more frustration, and a feedback loop of declining trust in the whole system. The "artisanal way" is absolutely the move. Leverage real connections, have conversations, and look for ways to create opportunities rather than applying into the void. The best jobs often aren't listed—they're created through conversations with the right people at the right time. Meanwhile, if anyone you know is using the Internet to "apply for jobs", take care of them. Consider them someone dabbling on the edge of despair, wondering if they should find a drug dealer. It's that bad.
